The hand playing Thing in Netflix’s Wednesday belongs to Romanian magician and actor Victor Dorobantu. He performs Thing’s movements on set in a blue chroma-key suit; visual-effects artists remove his body from the finished shot. Some especially difficult movements use computer-generated hands instead.
Who plays Thing in Wednesday?
Victor Dorobantu plays Thing. Netflix identifies him as Thing in its Season 2 cast guide, which describes him as a Romanian magician. His hand performance gives Thing much of the character’s physical expression.
Is Thing a real hand?
Often, yes: many shots begin with Dorobantu’s real hand performing on set. He wears a blue chroma-key suit, and visual-effects artists paint out the rest of his body. The effect combines that practical performance with concealment, set adjustments, prosthetics and, for some movements, digital work. Netflix’s behind-the-scenes feature, published December 8, 2022, shows how the practical performance and paint-out work together.
How do filmmakers hide the actor?
The crew stages each shot around the hand and the space Dorobantu needs to perform. The Television Academy’s production feature describes lighting choices that help visual-effects artists remove him, along with holes in sets and wardrobe accommodations that let him hold concealed positions. The challenge is not just to make a hand appear; it is to preserve Dorobantu’s timing and character in every gesture. Visual-effects supervisor Mark S. Turnbull put it this way: “It has to capture Victor’s performance, capture Victor’s character.”

When does Thing use a digital hand?
Not every movement can be performed practically from a concealed position. The Television Academy feature says some actions, including a complete turn or a jump, required computer-generated hands. Digital shots supplement Dorobantu’s work when the action or camera position makes a practical hand difficult to stage; they do not replace his performance as the foundation of the character.
What changed for Season 2?
In the official Wednesday Season 2 Woecast, dated August 13, 2025, prosthetics artist Tristan Versluis describes the makeup and prosthetic process: Dorobantu had his hand made up, then wore a chroma-key blue suit with a sleeve to the wrist. The team used different stump pieces for different camera positions and added a “robo stump” for Season 2. Dorobantu controlled its subtle movement with a joystick in his left hand.

That mechanical prop gave the crew another practical option for particular shots, alongside Dorobantu’s own hand performance and digital effects. Co-creator and co-showrunner Miles Millar praised the expressive result in Netflix’s cast guide: “When you watch Thing on-screen, he expresses such innate humanity. It looks simple, but it’s not. Victor can do so much with so little.”
