As a teenager, he said he hoped to go to college, but that expressed an intention—not evidence that he later enrolled.
What is documented about Michael Jackson’s education?
A 1989 Los Angeles Times report says Jackson attended Gardner Street Elementary School in Hollywood for a few months. It describes Gardner Street as the last public school he attended and says he switched to private tutoring soon afterward.
In a 1983 interview republished by The Guardian in 2012, Jackson recalled: “I only went to one public school in my life.” He said most of his schooling was private, including schooling with other entertainers’ children. Neither this account nor the Los Angeles Times report identifies a college.
Why is college sometimes mentioned?
In an interview transcript dated March 18, 1972, Jackson said: “I hope to still be doing the same thing, but I hope to go to college. I want to get a good education. That’s very important.” The transcript is hosted by the Michael Jackson Ultimate Archive. His words show that college was a hope at that point in his life; they do not establish that he later attended.

Motown’s official artist biography mentions the Jackson 5 taking part in a talent contest at Roosevelt High School in Gary, Indiana. That reference is about a contest, not evidence that Michael Jackson attended Roosevelt as a student or went to college there.
