Serenity is fictional, and Covington is the main stand-in
Serenity does not exist on a map, so there is no South Carolina town to visit. The show’s downtown, homes, and everyday streets are shot in Georgia, and Covington is the city most closely tied to the series. Discover Covington, the city’s official tourism site, presents Covington as Serenity and promotes a self-guided television and movie tour. Explore Georgia, the state tourism site, describes Covington as the show’s main filming location and a fan destination.
Covington is the place to start for any visit. The other three locales play smaller or more specific roles.

Georgia.org does not publish a scene-by-scene or episode-by-episode list, so the table shows only which cities each source names and for which seasons. Madison and Decatur should not be read as having equal screen time with Covington, and Savannah does not appear in every season.
Why Savannah appears in Season 5
Netflix’s Season 5 guide says the production used Savannah for Helen’s bachelorette trip and later for Maddie and Cal’s honeymoon. It attributes the choice to showrunner Sheryl Anderson, who described the city in these words:
“picturesque, romantic, and also just has that special ‘sunlight constantly filtered through old trees’ kind of gauziness that really sells the South,”
That is a partial sentence from Netflix’s article, quoted as Anderson’s description of Savannah, not a general statement about every location in the series. Netflix also links the choice to the logistics of an Atlanta-based production.
How Covington was chosen
An earlier report from The Covington News describes the production choosing Covington after scouting Savannah, Baton Rouge, and Charleston. The city’s historic homes and downtown were cited as a good fit for a series set in a small Southern town. That report covers the early decision, not the full history of location scouting for later seasons, which is why Savannah’s later Season 5 use does not contradict it.

Planning a visit
- Start with official local information in Covington about the self-guided film and television tour, and confirm the route before you go.
- Treat the tour as a public walking or driving route. Do not assume access to private homes, businesses, or active production sites.
- Check opening hours and any current conditions directly with the city or business before visiting. The sources reviewed do not establish current operating hours.
- In Savannah, the Season 5 connection is a destination-planning point. Netflix confirms the storyline and filming, but the sources do not identify a specific tour, lodging, or booking provider tied to the show.
- Do not rely on exact addresses from fan posts. The official sources name cities, not building-level locations.
What the sources do and do not establish
The city-level answer is well supported: Serenity is fictional, the show is filmed mainly in Georgia, Covington is the principal stand-in, Madison and Decatur are named for the first four seasons, and Savannah is named for Season 5. What remains unconfirmed is a complete list of filming addresses, scene-to-location matches, or a full breakdown of which locations appear in each season. Claims beyond the city level should be checked against a later official listing before being repeated.
