What happened to The Middle after its finale?
The ABC sitcom followed the Heck family in the fictional Indiana town of Orson. Its finale aired May 22, 2018, after nine seasons. The Middle’s series overview lists the show’s central cast as Patricia Heaton, Neil Flynn, Charlie McDermott, Eden Sher and Atticus Shaffer.

Where is The Middle cast now?
Patricia Heaton (Frankie Heck)
After playing Frankie, Heaton starred in the sitcom Carol’s Second Act and guest-starred on the Frasier revival. She also appeared in the films The Unbreakable Boy and The Ritual, both released in 2025, according to an Entertainment Weekly cast update republished by AOL on October 4, 2026.

Heaton has said she was not interested in rebooting The Middle. In a 2025 Entertainment Weekly interview, she reflected on the show: “I think people have such a good feeling about the show. It’s a beautiful thing.” That is a comment from the earlier interview, not a new 2026 statement.
Neil Flynn (Mike Heck)
Flynn, who played Mike, continued acting after the sitcom, including a role in Abby’s and a recurring part on Shrinking. The October 2026 cast update also reports that he returned as the Janitor for one episode of the Scrubs revival in 2026. It does not give further episode or production details.
Charlie McDermott (Axl Heck)
McDermott’s post-series credits include appearances in Instant Family (2018), Countdown (2019) and Petunia (2024). He has also worked behind the camera: his directing credits include the feature ImagiGary (2015) and an episode of The Middle in 2017.
Music has been another part of his work. The October 2026 update reports indie-folk albums in 2022 and 2024; it does not establish how frequently he is acting, directing or making music now.

Eden Sher (Sue Heck)
Sher has appeared as a guest on Superstore, How I Met Your Father and Night Court, and had a recurring role in season five of Jane the Virgin. In 2026, she released the comedy special Eden Sher: I Was on a Sitcom, according to the October 4 cast update.
A proposed post-college spinoff, Sue Sue in the City, was not made. Sher originated Sue’s victory dance on the original series.

Atticus Shaffer (Brick Heck)
Shaffer’s voice-acting credits include Frankenweenie, The Lion Guard, Steven Universe, Pete the Cat and Firebuds. The October 2026 cast update does not verify a recent post-Middle project, so it does not support a definitive claim about what he is doing now.

Peacock said in its March 2025 guide that all nine seasons and 215 episodes were available on its service at that time. That is a dated U.S.-service listing, not a guarantee of present-day access or availability elsewhere. Warner Bros.
