Where does Robert Downey Jr. live? Architectural Digest reported in April 2025 that the actor and his wife, Susan Downey, used their Malibu compound as the family’s primary residence. Their reported properties also include an East Hampton windmill home, a separate Malibu beach house and a Venice building used as a base for their production company, Team Downey. That reporting does not confirm whether the family’s residence or ownership has changed since then.

Robert Downey Jr.’s reported homes at a glance

Property Reported role Location and character What the reporting establishes
Malibu compound Family primary residence, as reported in April 2025 Country-style cottage on a seven-acre plot, with a separate domed clubhouse Architectural Digest reported the family’s primary-residence status in April 2025; it does not confirm the status today.
Malibu beach house Separate home reportedly bought for family use Single-story 1970s house with an ocean-view deck Architectural Digest reported Downey still owned it in April 2025; no later ownership confirmation is established here.
East Hampton windmill home Hamptons retreat Late-19th-century windmill folly expanded into a residence Architectural Digest toured it in 2017 and reported property details in 2025; those reports do not establish current ownership.

Malibu compound: the reported primary residence

Architectural Digest’s April 2025 retrospective says Robert and Susan Downey bought the Malibu compound in 2009 for a reported $13.4 million. The magazine described a four-bedroom, country-style cottage on seven acres, with pastures, animal enclosures, a tennis court and a barn converted into a two-bedroom guesthouse. It identified the compound as the family’s primary residence at the time of publication. Architectural Digest’s 2025 homes retrospective is the latest primary-residence description established here, not a live confirmation of where the family lives in 2026.

The separate Binishell clubhouse

The compound’s best-known architectural feature is not the family’s entire house. Downey commissioned architect Nicolò Bini in 2013 to create a 6,500-square-foot concrete clubhouse using the Binishell construction method. Architectural Digest describes it as a place for guests and entertaining, distinct from the cottage and the rest of the compound.

A second Malibu property: the beach house

Architectural Digest reported that Downey paid $3.8 million for a separate Malibu beach house in 2017. The magazine described it as a 3,400-square-foot, single-story 1970s home with three bedrooms and three bathrooms, an ocean-view deck, a detached garage and studio, and outdoor amenities including a kitchen, putting green, pool, cabana and fire pit. Its April 2025 account said Downey still owned the property then and suggested it was acquired for family use rather than as his own primary residence. Those are the magazine’s dated account and characterization, not independent confirmation of current ownership or use.

East Hampton: a windmill turned into a home

In 2017, Architectural Digest toured the Downeys’ East Hampton property, a late-19th-century windmill folly originally built as a playhouse. Later structural additions turned it into a full residence. The property combines a secluded, garden setting with proximity to East Hampton, and its renovation was led by AD100 designer Joe Nahem and Fox-Nahem Associates.

Architectural Digest’s 2025 retrospective reported a $10.5 million purchase price in 2017 and described seven bedrooms and 11 bathrooms across the main house, guesthouse and studio, on four acres. The magazine also reported a 50-foot pool and tennis court. These figures are published property particulars, not independently verified measurements or proof of present-day ownership.

Downey told Architectural Digest in 2017: “We didn’t set out to do something conspicuously wacky. We just enjoy a bit of whimsy and fun. And we definitely don’t like boring.” The remark fits a home that began as an unusual playhouse and grew into a family retreat.

Venice property: a base for Team Downey

Architectural Digest reported that the Downeys paid $5.6 million for a Venice property in 2009 to serve as a base for Team Downey. The magazine described a three-story, 7,500-square-foot modern building with a glass facade, rooftop deck and infinity pool, and said in 2025 that the couple still seemed to do business there. That description supports its role as a business property; it does not establish that the family lives there.

Are these homes still owned by Robert Downey Jr.?

Published property coverage is not the same as a current ownership record. Architectural Digest’s April 2025 retrospective is the most recent strong source here for the Malibu compound’s primary-residence status and reports that Downey still owned the separate Malibu beach house at that time. Its property descriptions also cover East Hampton and Venice, but do not independently verify present ownership of every home. A December 2025 realestate.com.au portfolio article offers later secondary coverage, but it is not a deed or direct confirmation from the family.

For that reason, the careful answer to “What houses does Robert Downey Jr. own?” is that published reports associate him and his family with these properties, with the clearest recent primary-residence statement dating to April 2025. Ownership and residence can change, and the available reporting does not establish a definitive current 2026 status.

Robert Downey Jr.’s real homes versus Tony Stark’s

The Malibu compound, East Hampton windmill home, beach house and Venice business property are reported real-world properties associated with Downey. Tony Stark’s mansion is a fictional residence from the Marvel stories, and film-location lore should not be mistaken for evidence about where the actor lives.
