It is the event most often named when people ask where kayfabe died. That phrase is useful shorthand, but it is not a literal historical fact. The moment is a clear, public break with character. It does not prove that kayfabe ended that night, and the people involved still disagree about what the audience understood at the time.
What happened on May 19, 1996
- Date and place: WWE dates the live event to May 19, 1996, at Madison Square Garden in New York. Its official footage page names Michaels (Heartbreak Kid), Diesel (Kevin Nash), Razor Ramon (Scott Hall) and Triple H as the participants. (WWE event footage page)
- The setting: WWE’s 2014 retrospective describes the footage as showing four men in the ring surrounded by a blue steel cage. At the time, their characters were enemies, even though they were close backstage friends in The Kliq. (WWE 2014 Kliq roundtable)
- The departure: According to WWE, Hall and Nash left WWE for WCW the following day. The ring celebration was framed by the participants as an emotional goodbye to two friends.
- Who was not in the ring: Sean Waltman was also a Kliq member, but he is not among the four men described in the ring.
What kayfabe is, and why this moment broke it
Kayfabe is the practice of presenting wrestling’s storylines and character relationships as real inside the performance. Fans were expected to treat rivalries as genuine, and performers were expected to protect that presentation in public. In the Curtain Call, performers whose characters were enemies openly behaved as friends in front of the crowd. That is why the moment is cited as an example of breaking character. The visible action is easy to describe. The meaning of that action is where the argument begins.
How the participants explain it
The clearest first-hand account comes from WWE’s 2014 roundtable with Michaels, Hall, Nash and Waltman. These are recollections given years later, and they should be read as the speakers’ own explanations rather than as independently verified backstage records.
Shawn Michaels
Michaels recalled that the gesture had been discussed during a European tour but was not revisited until Hunter asked about it that night. He said the group believed audiences understood that wrestling was an entertainment product. On the later controversy, he said: “It was not a big deal until it became a big deal.”

Kevin Nash
Nash recalled talking with Vince McMahon and Pat Patterson, and said the action had been approved. He insisted on the intent: “One thing I want to say is that situation and those actions were never done with malice.” On the effect of the moment, he said: “It exposed the business.”
Scott Hall
Hall gave the most concrete reason for staying in the ring. The crowd was cheering, and he said: “Had they not cheered, we’d have left.” He also acknowledged that other talent could see the act as an attempt to hurt the company.

Where kayfabe “died”: four separate questions
Most arguments about the Curtain Call blur four different things. Keeping them apart shows what the evidence supports.
| Layer | What it covers | What the record supports |
|---|---|---|
| Visible in-ring action | Four performers who were rivals embrace in the ring at Madison Square Garden | Established by WWE’s event date, footage page and 2014 retrospective |
| Participants’ later explanations | Friendship, farewell, lack of malice, and the belief that audiences understood wrestling’s entertainment aspect | Attributed recollections from the 2014 roundtable, not independently verified |
| Traditionalist reaction | Objections from fans and insiders who saw the act as harmful to the presentation | The 2014 interview says traditionalists objected; the individual critics and their statements are not identified |
| Broader claims about kayfabe’s decline | The idea that one night ended kayfabe for wrestling as a whole | Not established by these sources; it is retrospective interpretation |
Read this way, the Curtain Call is a strong example of a visible break with character. Calling it the night kayfabe died goes further than the evidence, because the participants themselves did not agree on what it exposed.

Fallout, and the claims the record does not support
WWE’s retrospective places the Curtain Call just before Hall and Nash joined WCW, where they became associated with the New World Order and the Monday Night War. That is context for the period. It does not show that the Curtain Call caused those developments.
Popular accounts often say Triple H was punished for the moment. The WWE roundtable does not document a specific punishment, suspension or career consequence. Its reference to a later comment by Steve Austin about Hunter “getting screwed” is a participant repeating someone else’s remark, not an independent record. Any detailed punishment narrative needs a separate, reliable source before it can be stated as fact.

Reading the moment accurately
The Curtain Call is documented in three layers: the May 19, 1996 event, the participants’ attributed explanations, and the later controversy they recall. The first is firmly established. The second is credible but self-reported, and it is the source of the sharpest disagreement. The third is where “kayfabe died” becomes an opinion rather than a finding. Treat the phrase as shorthand for a visible break in character, and treat claims about punishment or sweeping industry change as separate questions that need their own evidence.
