The reported address is 1256 Briarcliff Road NE, Atlanta, GA 30306. The building is on a restricted campus, not an open visitor attraction.
Where was Hawkins Lab filmed?
The lab’s real-world filming location is Building A on Emory University’s Briarcliff Campus, at 1256 Briarcliff Road NE, Atlanta, Georgia 30306. Georgia Public Broadcasting identifies the site as the location for Hawkins Lab: Georgia filming locations for Stranger Things.
Hawkins itself is fictional, and the lab is not in the show’s fictional Indiana town. It is one of several Georgia locations used for the series; reported filming locations also include Jackson, Douglasville, East Point, and Stockbridge.
What is the real building?
Emory identifies the site as Building A, a 1960s brutalist structure made of concrete, steel, and glass. It was originally used as a mental-health treatment facility and was later purchased by Emory. A history of Building A from Emory University describes the building and its use in productions.

The former institution was the Georgia Mental Health Institute, according to Condé Nast Traveler’s guide to Stranger Things filming locations. Its institutional interiors—including clinical and laboratory areas, lobbies, an auditorium, tunnels, and elevators—made the property adaptable for scenes set in a government facility.
Can you visit Hawkins Lab?
Do not plan to enter Building A or explore the campus. Georgia Public Broadcasting reported that visitors could drive past but could not go inside. In 2017, Emory official Karen Dracos said Briarcliff Campus was not open to the public because the buildings were old and hazards existed, and warned people not to attempt campus tourism for their own safety: 11Alive’s report on Emory’s warning.

Those access reports are dated, and no authoritative current status report establishes whether access or site conditions have changed. Check with Emory for current guidance before traveling, and stay off restricted property. Do not assume that the building is open or that a close-up view is available from the road.
What about Stranger Things tours in Georgia?
Jackson, Georgia, is a separate option to investigate: Georgia Public Broadcasting reported in October 2023 that visitors could book a Stranger Things filming-location tour there. That report does not say the tour includes Briarcliff Campus or confirm that bookings are still available. Check the operator’s current itinerary, schedule, and access terms before making plans: Georgia Public Broadcasting’s report on the Jackson tour.

A Jackson tour should not be treated as a way to enter Emory’s Briarcliff Campus. For any filming-location stop, confirm whether it is publicly accessible, viewed from a public road, or entered through an authorized tour, and verify current travel and booking details.

Georgia was a major production base for Stranger Things. The Georgia Department of Economic Development’s FY2026 second-quarter board book reports that season five involved 804 filming days in the state, more than 3,700 Georgians hired, and $198 million paid to local crew. The same state report says the production spent more than $800 million in Georgia since filming began in 2015.
