Alien: Romulus takes place between Alien and Aliens: roughly 20 years after the first film and about 37 years before its sequel. That makes the chronology-based viewing order Alien → Alien: Romulus → Aliens.
Where Alien: Romulus falls in the timeline
Time’s 2024 timeline explainer places Alien in 2122, Romulus roughly 20 years later, and Aliens in 2179. Adding the approximate interval to the first film’s date gives an inferred setting of around 2142 for Romulus; Time does not state 2142 as a separate exact date. Time’s timeline explainer

Why it belongs between the first two films
The official 20th Century Studios film page describes a story about young space colonizers scavenging a derelict station. Time connects the film’s plot to the creature from Alien and to Weyland-Yutani’s research station, providing the story link to the original film while placing the events before Aliens.
Fede Álvarez directed and co-wrote the film, and Ridley Scott was among its producers. In a Walt Disney Company interview, Álvarez described the project’s development as one of “many, many transformations and natural evolutions of a franchise.” Scott advised Álvarez during production, according to the interview; that production history offers context, but the timeline placement comes from the story chronology. #1 Best Overall
- This truly terrifying sci-fi horror-thriller takes the legendary ?Alien? franchise back to its iconic roots. While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young colonizers come face-to-face with the deadliest life form in the universe. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
What to watch before and after it
- Watch Alien first for the original film’s creature and the events that precede Romulus.
- Watch Alien: Romulus next to follow the story set between the two films.
- Watch Aliens afterward to continue the chronology.
This is a story-order recommendation, not a claim that release order or another viewing approach is incorrect. It covers the films that bracket Romulus, rather than prescribing a complete order for every title in the franchise.
