It is about his father, the playwright Swadesh Deepak, who left the house for a walk on June 7, 2006, and, in his son’s account, never returned. The piece is an excerpt from Sukant Deepak’s longer essay “Papa, Elsewhere,” which appears in The Book of Light: When a Loved One Has a Different Mind, an anthology edited by Jerry Pinto.
What the essay covers
The essay is a family memoir written from the son’s point of view. Its center is the June 2006 walk and the absence that followed. Around that event, the author recalls his father’s serious mental illness and the conflict that filled the household. The headline’s phrase about “the hatred of his family” is the author’s framing of those years, and it should be read as his perception of relationships under strain rather than as a neutral account from every family member.
What the essay reports, and how to read each claim
The essay makes several specific claims. None of them is presented as a court record, medical file or published biography, so readers should keep track of who is making each statement.
| Detail | What the essay says | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Departure | Swadesh Deepak left for a walk on June 7, 2006, and did not return | The son’s account of the central event |
| Diagnosis | Bipolar disorder, diagnosed in the 1990s | Reported by the essay; not independently confirmed in this article |
| Award | Sangeet Natak Akademi award in 2004 | Reported by the essay; not independently confirmed in this article |
Confirming the award would be a matter for the Sangeet Natak Akademi’s own records. Medical history is private, so the diagnosis is best understood as the family’s account, not an outside verification.

A remembered line
The essay quotes Swadesh Deepak asking: “Do you really think English is rich enough to accommodate the power of Mayavani?” This is dialogue as Sukant Deepak remembers it, not a recording, transcript or interview. Its value is in what it shows of the father’s voice and preoccupations as the son recalls them.

Reading a family account of mental illness well
- Treat the essay as one son’s memory of events, not as a biography or clinical record.
- Separate the factual anchors (the date of the walk, the diagnosis, the award) from the interpretation of family conflict, which is the author’s own reading.
- Look for the author’s own uncertainty. A memoir about someone who disappeared will always contain gaps that the writer cannot close.
- If you want independent detail on Swadesh Deepak’s career or awards, start with the institutions that recognised him rather than with the essay.
