Content note: This article discusses rape and sexual assault, including a scene that one specialist content advisory describes as extremely graphic.
The principal on-screen rape in 13 Reasons Why is in Season 1, Episode 9, “Tape 5, Side A.” The other explicit sexual assault that content guides clearly identify is in Season 2, Episode 13, “Bye,” where Tyler is assaulted. Later seasons return to the Season 1 assault through brief flashbacks and a character’s account, rather than showing a new rape. No verified scene start times are available for any version of the series, so this guide tells you which episodes to check rather than where to press play.

Season 1, Episode 9: “Tape 5, Side A”
This is the episode that contains the main on-screen rape. The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) classifies it for sexual violence, and the Unconsenting Media scene listing identifies an on-screen rape within it. That listing estimates the scene runs about two minutes. That figure describes how long the scene lasts, not when it begins, so it cannot be used to locate it in your copy.
The BBFC’s record for this episode gives a runtime of 58 minutes 56 seconds. That is the length of the whole episode, not a timestamp for any scene.

Season 2, Episode 13: “Bye”
The BBFC classifies this episode for sexual violence. Unconsenting Media describes a teenage boy, Tyler, being sexually assaulted in an extremely graphic scene. That is the second explicit assault that the sources establish clearly. The description comes from a specialist advisory listing, so it reflects that listing’s account of the scene rather than an official plot summary.
Episodes with a sexual-violence label but no separate rape established
Several episodes carry a sexual-violence classification or descriptor, but the classification alone does not tell you whether a new assault is shown. The table below separates the label from what the sources actually describe.
| Season and episode | What the classification says | What it does and does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Season 1, Episode 10, “Tape 5, Side B” | BBFC descriptor: “references to sexual violence” | The assault is discussed or referred to. The descriptor alone does not establish a new rape scene. |
| Season 1, Episode 12, “Tape 6, Side B” | BBFC classifies the episode for sexual violence | The label is real, but it does not on its own establish a distinct on-screen rape. |
| Season 2, Episode 4, “The Second Polaroid” | BBFC descriptor includes sexual violence | The sources cited here do not establish a specific rape scene in this episode. |
Unconsenting Media says the Season 1, Episode 9 incident is discussed and analysed through the rest of that season. Later references to it are not repeated full depictions of the assault.
Season 3: flashbacks and a recounted assault
Season 3 does not stage a new assault in the material cited here. It does revisit earlier events in three ways:

- Season 3, Episode 1: The New Zealand Classification Office notes brief flashbacks from Season 2 showing Tyler being dragged to his assault. These are recollections of an earlier scene, not a new one.
- Season 3, Episode 7: The episode guide describes brief audio snippets of the Season 1 assaults within an imagined conversation. According to the guide, no nudity is shown.
- Season 3, Episode 8: Tyler tells Clay about his assault. The guide describes the account as distressing and graphic. The episode shows a character speaking about the assault, not the assault happening again.
Why no scene timestamps are given
None of the sources cited here gives a verifiable start time for any scene in a current streaming version. Streaming versions, regional presentation, recaps and intro cards can all shift playback positions, so a timestamp taken from one copy may not match another. Netflix’s title page describes the series as having four seasons and displays a content warning, but it does not supply scene timestamps. Its catalogue description may also vary by region. Because the cited material does not establish an exhaustive scene inventory for all four seasons, treat the episode list above as the verified scope.
The BBFC case study on Netflix’s 2019 edit of the Season 1 finale’s suicide scene concerns that scene only. It is not evidence that the rape scenes were changed.

Viewers often phrase the question as a request for time stamps. One Reddit post asked for “time stamps on when triggering things (SA, PTSD episodes, physical violence) etc happen.” That is one individual’s wording, not survey data, but it reflects the same need.

- Confirm the season, episode number and title in your player before starting, since numbering and presentation can differ by region and version.
- Use the episode list above, not a timestamp from another copy or a community post, to decide which episodes to skip or prepare for.
- Remember that Season 3’s flashbacks and Tyler’s account can be just as distressing as a depicted scene, even though they show no new assault.
