Hoda Kotb’s last official day on NBC’s Today was January 10, 2025. She announced her departure in September 2024, saying that turning 60 had prompted her to think about her next decade and that her daughters and mother needed more of her time. The “17 years” in the headline counts her time on Today, which began in 2007. Her NBC career started earlier, in 1998.
Key dates in her departure
The announcement, the reported final day, and the later confirmation came from different reports at different points, so the dates are easier to follow in order.
| Date | What was reported | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 1998 | Kotb joins NBC News as a Dateline correspondent. | Associated Press; NBCUniversal |
| 2007 | Kotb joins Today. | Associated Press; NBCUniversal |
| 2018 | She begins co-anchoring the show’s first two hours with Savannah Guthrie. She also co-hosts the fourth hour, including with Jenna Bush Hager. | Associated Press |
| September 26, 2024 | Kotb announces she will leave the program. | Associated Press |
| November 2024 | AP reports that her final official day will be January 10, 2025. | Associated Press |
| January 8, 2025 | An NBCUniversal retrospective says her fourth-hour co-anchor period will end January 10. | NBCUniversal |
| January 10, 2025 | Her last official day on Today. | Associated Press; NBCUniversal |
The January 10 date is the last-day report. The September 2024 announcement is a separate event, which is why the two are often confused.
Why she said she was leaving
Kotb attributed the decision to herself and her personal life. In her note to colleagues, as quoted by the Associated Press, she wrote:

Why “17 years” and not 26
The two numbers measure different things. Kotb’s NBC News career began in 1998, when she joined as a Dateline correspondent. AP’s 2024 coverage described her tenure at NBC as more than two decades, which corresponds to the roughly 26 years between 1998 and 2024.
The headline’s 17 years refers only to Today, which she joined in 2007. Her time on the program ended with the January 10, 2025 last day.

Who replaces her on the show
AP reported in November 2024 that Craig Melvin would take over Kotb’s slot in Today‘s 7 to 9 a.m. hours. That report also said NBC had not yet named a replacement for the 10 a.m. hour. That is a dated snapshot of the November 2024 announcement, not a current description of the lineup. For the present schedule, check NBC’s own Today program information.

In a career interview published by NBCUniversal, Kotb described a test she applied to her work: “If I love it, that’ll be my litmus test.” The interview is useful for her outlook on the job, but it does not explain the departure.
