Chinese New Year 2025 began on January 29, 2025, the first day of the Year of the Snake. The full moon that month, which NASA associates with the name “Wolf Moon,” fell two weeks earlier, on January 13, 2025. The two events are linked only by sequence: the full moon came first, and the new moon on January 29 marked the start of the lunar month that the holiday follows. Because the article’s reference to “today’s” full moon describes January 2025, the event is now historical, and this piece treats it that way.

The exact dates and times

The clearest way to check the 2025 dates is to use NASA’s phase table, which lists moon phases in Greenwich Mean Time (UTC). The table gives the January 2025 phases as follows.

Event Date (UTC) Time (UTC) What it means for the holiday
Full moon (the “Wolf Moon”) January 13, 2025 22:27 Occurred in the middle of the previous lunar month; it has no bearing on the holiday date.
New moon January 29, 2025 12:36 Begins the lunar month that starts Lunar New Year 2025.

Source: NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, “Phases of the Moon: 2001 to 2025 (GMT)”.

The new moon’s UTC time converts to 20:36 on January 29 in China and Hong Kong, which run on UTC+8. That is still January 29 locally, so the local calendar date and the UTC date agree for this event. The Hong Kong Observatory’s official 2025 almanac marks January 29 as Lunar New Year’s Day in Hong Kong, which corroborates the date for that city. Why the holiday moves from year to year

Chinese New Year is set by a lunisolar calendar, not the Gregorian calendar used for everyday dating. Timeanddate’s explainer on the Chinese calendar says the calendar tracks lunar months while keeping the year aligned with the seasons, and it uses leap months to do so. As a result, the holiday usually falls somewhere between January 21 and February 21, but the exact day changes annually. Source: timeanddate.com, “The Chinese Calendar”.

A common shorthand says the holiday starts at the second new moon after the winter solstice. That shorthand is useful for intuition but is not a complete rule. Calendar conventions and time-zone choices can shift a date, so the reliable approach is to check an official almanac for the calendar in question rather than counting moons yourself.

How the full moon fits in

A full moon falls roughly halfway through each lunar month, so a full moon two weeks before a new moon is expected rather than unusual. In January 2025 it simply sat between the previous new moon and the new moon that opened the holiday month. Nothing about the full moon determined January 29; the new moon and the calendar’s conventions did.

Where the “Wolf Moon” name comes from

NASA’s January 28, 2025 image article describes the name as coming from a tradition rather than from astronomy. It states that “The Maine Farmers’ Almanac began publishing Native American names for full moons in the 1930s.” It adds that “According to this almanac, the full moon in January is called the Wolf Moon, from the packs of wolves heard howling outside the villages amid the cold and deep snows of winter.” Source: NASA, “Wolf Moon in Washington”.

These are the almanac’s names as NASA reports them. They are not an astronomical designation, and the name is not a single, universal convention across Indigenous nations. Other traditions use different names for the same January full moon, which is one reason the name belongs to a specific almanac tradition.

Using the right reference for a date question

  • For the exact moment of a phase: use NASA’s UTC phase table and state the time zone.
  • For the Hong Kong calendar date: use the Hong Kong Observatory almanac, which gives the local festival dates.
  • For a general explanation of how the calendar works: use timeanddate’s Chinese calendar guide.

Lunar New Year is also called Spring Festival in mainland China, and “Chinese New Year” is the common English term. Searches for “Year of the Snake 2025” lead to the same date.

What came after the Year of the Snake

The Year of the Snake ended when the following Lunar New Year began in February 2026, which opened the Year of the Horse. Anyone looking up the start of a current Chinese zodiac year should confirm the date against an official almanac for that specific year, because the holiday’s Gregorian date changes annually.
