Snoop Dogg announced the Snoop Lion name at a New York press conference on Monday, July 30, 2012. He said the name came to him during a trip to Jamaica, and he tied it to a reggae direction and a project called Reincarnated. Snoop Lion was a stage alias for that period, not a legal name change, and Snoop has said he never meant to abandon the Snoop Dogg name or hip-hop.
When the name was announced
The announcement was made at a New York press conference on July 30, 2012. Coverage of the event appeared on July 31 and August 1, 2012, so the event date and the article dates are different things. The Guardian’s report is dated July 31, 2012, and the ABC News/AFP report is dated August 1, 2012. Both describe the same announcement.
Where the name came from, in Snoop’s account
Snoop said the name originated during a visit to Jamaica. In his account, a high priest at a Rastafarian temple told him that he was no longer Dogg, and called him “the light” and “the lion.” That is Snoop’s description of the encounter as reported at the time. It is not an independently verified ceremony, and no record in the coverage shows a formal religious or legal name change.
The coverage disagrees on when the trip happened, with some accounts placing it in January and others in February 2012. No month is established, so the safest way to describe it is “during a trip to Jamaica.”

What Snoop Lion meant
Snoop connected the alias to a more peaceful musical direction and to the Reincarnated project, which was built around reggae. In a 2013 interview with Kam Williams, he explained the choice this way:
“My name was given to me. I didn’t just decide to change it one day. But I ran with it to reflect a more peaceful and positive attitude for my new Reincarnated project. The Snoop Dogg name is so connected to hip-hop, and I didn’t want to change that. Hip-hop raised me, and I would never turn my back on it.”

The announcement itself carried a more dramatic line. The ABC News/AFP report quotes Snoop saying, “I want to bury Snoop Dogg and become Snoop Lion.” Read alongside his 2013 remarks, the two statements show the mood of the launch, while the later interview gives the more considered explanation.
Was it a permanent change?
No source in the coverage describes Snoop Lion as a permanent replacement for Snoop Dogg. At the 2012 press conference, he said he would keep making rap music, and he described himself as enjoying reggae at that time. The alias therefore belongs to a specific musical chapter, not to a formal rename.

The same 2013 interview also addresses religion. Snoop said he respected the Rastafarian religion and lifestyle but did not identify himself as a Rastafarian. The temple episode is therefore best read as part of his story about the alias, not as evidence of a settled religious identity.
The sources reviewed here do not establish how long the Snoop Lion name stayed in use after the reggae project. If you are checking a specific album credit, release, or live listing, look at the name printed on that item, because the alias and the original name were both in circulation around this period.
