Roy describes it instead as “a book of complicated love,” written without trying to resolve or label the contradictions between her and her mother, Mary Roy. That leaves forgiveness less like a final verdict than a question the memoir allows to remain open.
What is the memoir about?
Mother Mary Comes to Me is Roy’s first memoir, centered on her complicated relationship with Mary Roy. Mary’s death in September 2022 prompted her daughter to begin writing it, according to the publisher and the Associated Press. Roy has described mourning her not only as a daughter but as a writer who had lost “her most enthralling subject.”
The book’s emotional subject is inseparable from Mary’s public life. She was an educator and women’s rights activist, founder of Pallikoodam, and a successful litigant in an inheritance-law case. The memoir therefore holds two portraits together: a mother whose force shaped her daughter’s private world, and a public figure whose work had consequences beyond the family.
Does Roy forgive her mother?
The available evidence does not establish a neat ending in which anger is overcome and forgiveness declared. Roy’s own account points away from that kind of resolution. In an August 2025 Vogue India interview, she says, “I see it as a book of complicated love.” She explains that the challenge was “writing the complications without trying to resolve them, judge them or put a label on them.”

That is not the same as saying forgiveness is absent. It means that readers should be cautious about treating reconciliation as the memoir’s settled conclusion. Love, anger, dependence, protection and volatility can coexist without being reconciled into a single moral lesson. The title’s “true forgiveness” is best understood as a question for readers, not a result Roy has publicly claimed.
Why the anger cannot be separated from love
Reviews emphasize different parts of this difficult bond. Amit Chaudhuri’s Guardian review foregrounds the entanglement of love, dependence, protection and volatility. Rebecca Mead’s New Yorker review connects anger and scenes of caregiving to caste and social order, showing how the private relationship sits within wider structures of power.

These are critical readings, not interchangeable summaries or a substitute for Roy’s own framing. Together, they help explain why “rage” alone is too narrow: the mother-daughter story carries affection and reliance as well as injury and conflict, while the social world around Mary complicates any account confined to family feeling.

Some readers may want the memoir to settle into a clear account of what the daughter finally feels or what forgiveness would mean. Roy’s stated aim resists that expectation. She chose to write the complications without forcing them into a judgment, and the available interviews and reviews do not establish a definitive closing scene of forgiveness.

There is also a question of form, distinct from the question of emotional resolution. In a later essay, Vivian Gornick in the New York Review of Books questions whether the memoir’s parts feel fully knit together. That reservation concerns how the narrative holds together; it should not be mistaken for proof that Roy failed to forgive, or that the book must supply a tidy emotional answer.

How to read the memoir’s open question
- Separate authorial intent from interpretation. Roy calls the book one of complicated love and says she did not set out to resolve or label its difficulties. Critics offer their own readings of its emotional and political dimensions.
- Keep Mary’s public legacy in view. The mother in the memoir is also an educator and activist; private conflict and public consequence are both part of the portrait.
- Do not equate love with absolution. The memoir’s emphasis on attachment does not, by itself, establish that anger has disappeared or that the past has been forgiven.
