The answer depends on which MasterChef you mean. The franchise launched in the UK on BBC One in 1990, but the winner of that original series is not confirmed by an official source. The first winner of the UK revival, MasterChef Goes Large, was Thomasina Miers, who won the 2005 series. The official MasterChef UK retrospective calls her the first MasterChef UK winner. Her later career includes co-founding the Mexican restaurant chain Wahaca, appearing in Channel 4 programmes and writing several cookbooks. Public information about what she is doing today is limited, so the sections below separate what is documented from what is not.
Which “first winner” you mean
MasterChef has been run as separate national editions, and the original UK series and its later revival are different shows with different winners. Compare the three most-asked versions:
| Edition | First winner named | Year | Status in the sources |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK original (BBC One) | Not confirmed by an official source. A secondary reference names Joan Bunting. | 1990 launch | Launch date confirmed by the official franchise history; winner unverified |
| UK revival (MasterChef Goes Large) | Thomasina Miers | 2005 | Named as the first MasterChef UK winner in the official MasterChef UK retrospective |
| US edition | Whitney Miller | 2010 | Named as first-season winner in the official MasterChef US retrospective |
The 1990 UK original: a winner name still to be confirmed
The official franchise history dates the launch of MasterChef to BBC One in 1990. A secondary reference lists Joan Bunting as the winner of that original series. No official or broadcaster record was found to confirm the name, so it should not be stated as settled. Until a BBC schedule, an archived episode listing or another primary record confirms it, the honest answer for the original series is that the winner is unverified.
Thomasina Miers: the first UK revival winner
Miers won MasterChef Goes Large in 2005. That series was the first season of the revival, so her title is the first UK winner in the revived show, not the first winner of the 1990 original. Describing her as the first UK winner without that qualifier overstates what the official record shows.
#1 Best Overall
What the official record says she did after the show
- She co-founded Wahaca, a Mexican restaurant chain.
- She appeared in Channel 4 programmes.
- She wrote several cookbooks, including Meat-free Mexican.
What is not established today
- Her current role at Wahaca. The official retrospective does not describe one, so avoid claims that she runs the business or holds a particular operating position.
- Current restaurant operations and any recent projects, which the available sources do not cover.
- Whether the Channel 4 appearances and cookbooks listed are her most recent work.
If you mean the US edition
The official MasterChef US retrospective names Whitney Miller as the winner of the first US season in 2010. It says she later published cookbooks and worked as a private chef, food stylist and recipe developer. These details belong to the US show and should not be applied to the UK winners above.

- Establish the country and whether the claim refers to the original run or a revival.
- Check the year against the broadcaster’s listings for the original 1990 series, or against the official MasterChef site for revival and national-edition seasons.
- Look for the name in a primary record, such as a broadcaster schedule, an official retrospective or the show’s own credits. A single secondary reference is not enough.
- Date any career claim. Business roles and book lists change, so a line that was accurate at publication may be out of date.
Using this approach, the reliable answer is that the first UK revival winner is Thomasina Miers, and the first winner of the original 1990 UK series remains unconfirmed.
