It’s called cosplay, short for “costume play.” Someone dressing as an anime character is cosplaying, and that person is a cosplayer.
What does cosplay mean?
Cosplay means dressing to represent a particular fictional character. Anime Central describes convention attendees creating or commissioning costumes of favorite anime characters and wearing them to the event. Acting or performing in character is not required by the definition.
Use “anime cosplay” when you want to specify that the character comes from anime. “Cosplay” on its own is the broader term. It also covers characters from manga, video games, films, comics, and other fiction, as the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage explains. The World Cosplay Summit likewise describes an international event featuring characters from anime, manga, and video games.
How is cosplay different from wearing a regular costume?
A generic costume does not necessarily represent a specific character. Cosplay, in this context, is about dressing as one. The distinction is about what the outfit represents, not how elaborate it is: the definition does not set a craftsmanship standard or require a performance.

Where did the word “cosplay” come from?
The Smithsonian account credits Japanese writer and studio founder Nobuyuki Takahashi with coining “cosplay” as a blend of “costume” and “play” in 1983. That date concerns the word, not the beginning of fan costuming. The Smithsonian says costuming at the 1939 World Science Fiction Convention likely predates the term; that earlier event is best described as a probable example of fan dress, not as the settled origin of cosplay.
Cosplay’s use later spread among fans dressing as manga and anime characters at events such as Comiket, and the term is now used more broadly around the world. The National Museum of Denmark’s cosplay lexicon also defines the term as “costume play,” though accounts differ on the date framing for its Japanese use.

What should you call someone who does it?
A person who cosplays is a cosplayer. For example: “She’s cosplaying an anime character” or “He’s an anime cosplayer.”
