Meet Joe Black is a 1998 fantasy drama about a wealthy businessman who makes a bargain with Death. Joe Black, a stranger who turns up days before Bill Parrish’s 65th birthday, is Death in human form. Bill agrees to show him how to live on Earth in exchange for a little more time, and the arrangement falls apart when Joe falls in love with Bill’s daughter, Susan.
The premise, step by step
The film opens with Bill Parrish in a comfortable life of wealth, business influence, and family obligations. Universal Pictures’ official synopsis for the film, published on its Universal Pictures At Home page, describes the moment that starts everything: “Days before his 65th birthday, he receives a visit from a mysterious stranger, Joe Black (Brad Pitt), who soon reveals himself as Death.”
The bargain itself is simple to state and hard to honor:
- Death takes a human body. Joe Black is Death using the body and identity of a young man, so he can move through ordinary life.
- Bill offers a guide. Joe needs someone to teach him how people live, eat, work, and connect, and Bill agrees to act as that guide.
- Bill gets more time. In return, Death grants Bill extra life. Bill knows that time is temporary, which is the source of the film’s quiet dread.
- Joe learns human appetite and affection from the inside. The arrangement stops being purely transactional once Joe begins to feel things for himself.
Why Susan changes the story
Joe’s relationship with Susan, Bill’s daughter, is what gives the premise its dramatic pressure. Her presence brings Joe’s experience of being human into direct contact with Bill’s family, and it puts the bargain in tension. The film does not treat the romance as a side plot. It is the point where the agreement between Bill and Death starts to matter to people who never signed it.

Reading the film’s themes
Viewers often describe the movie in terms of love, mortality, and the value of ordinary experience. Those are fair readings of the premise, since the story keeps returning to a man who knows his time is limited and a visitor who is discovering what that time is worth. They are interpretations rather than a single official statement of what the film means, so it is reasonable for viewers to draw different conclusions from the same plot.
