McDonald’s does not define what he is. In its 2023 U.S. announcement, the company asked the question directly: “What exactly is Grimace? Perhaps we’ll never know…” This guide separates what McDonald’s actually says from the folklore that has grown around him, and shows how his promotions have varied by country and year.
What McDonald’s says Grimace is
Across the company’s official descriptions, Grimace has the same profile: a fuzzy purple figure with a friendly, playful personality and a love of shakes. That is the full official picture of his look and temperament. Nothing in the company’s material gives him a species, an origin in biology, or a physical form beyond the purple fuzz.
The family lore
The 2023 U.S. release added invented family history. Grimace comes from Grimace Island and has a large family, including Grandma Winky, aunts Millie and Tillie, and Uncle O’Grimacey. This is brand storytelling, not a scientific account, and McDonald’s has framed it as playful rather than explanatory. Treat it as the company’s fiction about the character, not a definition of what he is.
Is Grimace a milkshake?
No. McDonald’s presents him as a character who loves shakes, not as a drink. The confusion is understandable because his best-known promotions center on a purple shake that matches his color, but the shake is a product tied to the character, not the character itself.

Where the character comes from
McDonald’s Austria describes Grimace as a purple mascot dating to the 1970s. That is the broadest dating in the official material available. No primary source establishes a precise debut date or a complete original design history for the character.
A widely repeated online story claims Grimace began as a villainous, many-armed creature. Official material does not support that account, so treat it as unverified until a primary historical source confirms it.

The Grimace Shake and the campaigns by market
Grimace promotions have been regional, with different items, launch dates and windows in each country. A press release date shows when an offer launched, not whether it is still available. The table below keeps each market separate.

Germany’s 2026 campaign
McDonald’s Deutschland’s spring 2026 campaign is the most detailed of the recent regional promotions. Its glass offer ran from May 11 and required the app and a double-meal coupon. The company also reported that over 70 percent of households in Germany owned at least one McDonald’s Coca-Cola glass. McDonald’s said this figure came from an Appinio survey it commissioned in February 2026, covering 1,000 people aged 16 to 65 and representative for age and gender in Germany. The statistic concerns Coca-Cola glasses, not Grimace or the character’s popularity.

Collectibles and merchandise
Grimace has also appeared in merchandise. McDonald’s said its U.S. Squishmallows Happy Meal promotion, starting December 26, 2023, included Grimace among twelve characters. That is a historical collectible. The announcement does not establish whether the plush is still available. If you are searching for one, check the seller, item description and current stock yourself, because listings for character plush are not always genuine.
Why McDonald’s keeps the mystery
In the company’s June 2023 announcement, Tariq Hassan, McDonald’s USA Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer, said: “Grimace is the perfect lovable icon to have McDonald’s meet our fans at the intersection of nostalgia and culture.” That statement describes marketing intent. It does not show how audiences actually feel about the character, and the company has not published figures on his overall popularity or the shake’s sales that would settle that question.
How to check whether a Grimace offer is running
- Start with the McDonald’s website and app for your own country. Campaigns are regional, and an offer in one market does not mean it exists in yours.
- Find the original announcement and note its launch date and stated window. Use the window the company gives, not the date you saw the offer shared online.
- Look for “while supplies last” or “participating restaurants” wording. Those phrases mean the offer may be unavailable at your local branch even while the campaign is technically live.
- For collectibles, confirm the exact item, seller and current stock before buying, and treat older promotion announcements as evidence of what was released, not what can be bought now.
If you only want to know what Grimace is, the answer McDonald’s gives is intentionally incomplete: a fuzzy purple character who loves shakes, with family lore but no definition.
