In the United States, jazz became the sound most closely associated with the 1920s, but it was only part of the decade’s musical life. Blues, Tin Pan Alley songs and dance music, and early commercially recorded country music also mattered. Which music people heard depended on community, region, and how songs reached them; the available sources do not establish one definitive national popularity ranking.

Jazz became the decade’s defining popular sound

Jazz grew from African American musical traditions in the South and drew on a wider mix of forms, including ragtime, blues, spirituals, marches, and popular songwriting. By the 1920s, it was being played around the country by Black and white bands, and became closely associated with the Roaring Twenties. It was also dance music, carried to audiences through live performance and recording.

Its broadening audience did not mean equal access. The Smithsonian notes that some venues featuring Black performers excluded Black patrons. Jazz’s national visibility coexisted with racial barriers and with the continuing musical life of Black communities. Smithsonian Music’s account of jazz and blues describes both the music’s spread and that context.

Blues reached a wider recorded audience

A key commercial moment came in 1920, when Mamie Smith’s “Crazy Blues” reached a national audience. The Library of Congress says the record sparked a vogue for women blues singers performing with bands. That success was significant, but it should not be taken to mean that every blues style had the same national exposure.

Country blues also had a strong place in African American communities in the southern United States during the 1920s and 1930s. Its community and regional setting differs from the story of a hit record reaching a wider market. The Library of Congress overview of blues in popular songs covers Mamie Smith’s breakthrough; Smithsonian Folkways describes country blues in the South.

Tin Pan Alley supplied songs for popular circulation

Not all popular music of the decade was defined by a genre such as jazz or blues. Tin Pan Alley songwriters produced commercially successful songs, drawing on older popular-song forms as well as ragtime and jazz. A common verse-and-refrain structure helped make songs easy to circulate and remember; the refrain was often treated as the song’s central musical portion. Some of these songs remained in circulation and later became known as standards.

This songwriting tradition is part of the answer to what people listened to: popular songs and dance music moved through commercial channels alongside recordings and live jazz. The U.S. Government Publishing Office’s account of Tin Pan Alley explains the songwriting context and verse-refrain form.

Country music entered commercial recording

Country music began to be commercially recorded in the early 1920s. Its development drew on traditions from different regions: Southern gospel and blues, Western cowboy music, and Northern Tin Pan Alley songs. That mix makes country relevant to a broad account of the decade, while the timing of its commercial recordings is not evidence that it held one uniform national position.

Smithsonian Folklife’s history of the Bristol Sessions describes country’s early commercial recording and regional influences.

Popularity depended on community, region, and access

There was no single listening experience shared by everyone in the United States. Jazz spread through bands and dance settings; Tin Pan Alley songs circulated as commercial popular music; blues records could carry performers to a national audience even as regional forms remained rooted in particular communities; and country music was beginning its commercial recording history. These are different kinds of reach, not directly comparable measures of popularity.

Ragtime, spirituals, and marches also belong in the wider musical picture, especially as influences and related forms. The sources establish their place in the musical landscape, but do not show that each was equally popular nationwide as a standalone genre throughout the decade. Nor do they provide comparable sales or broadcast figures to rank jazz, blues, popular songs, and country against one another. The National Park Service’s history of New Orleans jazz places jazz within this broader musical revolution.

So, what was the most popular music of the 1920s?

Jazz is the clearest answer if the question means the sound most strongly associated with the decade. But “most popular” cannot be reduced to a proven national ranking from the available evidence. Blues, Tin Pan Alley songs and dance music, and early country recordings all had important audiences and pathways into people’s lives; their reach varied by community and region.

Big-band swing should not be treated as the dominant music of the entire decade. A looser dance style was developing toward what would soon be called swing by the late 1920s, but that is a transition, not a description of the whole decade.
