What to Do on Christmas If You Don’t Celebrate: Ideas for 2026

You don’t need a special plan for 25 December. Choose the kind of day you want (social, active, helpful, exploratory or restful), then confirm that the places and transport you need are open before you commit. Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday, and in many places most shops, attractions and public transport will be closed, so the planning step matters more than the choice of activity.

Start with what you want from the day

Not celebrating Christmas is a valid preference. Readers who ask this question have many reasons: they may be of a different faith or none, they may simply not mark the holiday, they may be working or caring for someone, or they may want a day off that feels different from the rest of the year. There is no need to explain the reason, and no need to invent a substitute holiday.

The UK Civil Service’s faith and belief toolkit makes a useful point for both personal and workplace planning: social plans work best when they reflect people’s preferences, offer a range of choices across the year, and never make belonging depend on taking part in something a person is uncomfortable with. Applied to your own day, that means you can say yes to company, no to ceremony, and still have a full day.

Five kinds of day to choose from

The CDC’s holiday guidance points to a wide range of activities beyond holiday meals, including volunteering, seasonal activities such as ice skating or winter hiking, walking with someone, visiting a museum or exhibit, and starting new traditions. The table below compares the five broad types of day that follow from that kind of list.

Type of day Company or solitude Indoor or outdoor Main dependency
Social Company Either; often at home or a restaurant Restaurant reservations and whether friends or family are free
Active Either; a walk can be solo or shared Outdoor Weather, daylight and whether local paths or ice rinks are open
Helpful Company, usually with strangers or a group Usually indoor Whether the organization is accepting volunteers on that date
Exploratory Either Mostly indoor, with some outdoor sights Venue opening hours and transport to reach them
Restful Solitude or quiet company Indoor Almost none; works even if everything else is closed

Social: a meal, a call or a walk

If you want company, arrange something informal with friends or family. A walk, a long call or a shared meal does not have to be framed as a Christmas event. If you are eating out, VisitBritain advises that some pubs and restaurants serve meals on Christmas Day in the UK, but advance booking is strongly recommended because capacity is limited.

Active: walks, ice and winter hiking

Walks are the most reliable outdoor option because they need no booking. Seasonal activities such as ice skating or winter hiking can work well, but check that the rink, trail or tour operator is running on the day. Bring a home-based fallback in case weather changes your plans.

Helpful: volunteering

Volunteering is a meaningful way to spend the day, but it is the option most dependent on local rules. Look for a local organization that is actively recruiting for 25 December and read its current sign-up information yourself. Do not assume a shift will be available, because sign-up rules and demand vary from one organization to the next.

Exploratory: museums, exhibits and lights

A museum or exhibit can be a calm change of scenery, but many are closed on Christmas Day. Check the venue’s own holiday schedule rather than a general guide. In a city, the bigger question is often getting there, which leads to the next section.

Restful: a deliberately quiet day

A book, a favourite meal, a hobby or a film marathon is a legitimate plan. A documentary marathon suits a day at home well, with the added benefit that it needs nothing open and nobody else’s schedule. Treat this as a personal choice, not an obligation to unwind.

Another date

If you want a gathering or a special meal but not on 25 December, choose another day that works for the people involved. The point of the day is what you do with it, not the calendar date.

Check what is open before you commit

Christmas Day availability is local. The guidance below applies to the UK and London, and other countries and cities can differ, so confirm the rules where you live.

  • UK in general: VisitBritain says many shops, restaurants and attractions are closed on Christmas Day. Some pubs and restaurants serve meals, and advance booking is strongly recommended.
  • London specifically: Visit London says most attractions close on Christmas Day and that the city’s buses, trams, Underground and Overground do not operate. Its suggested options include a park walk, seeing the Christmas lights, a Christmas tour and some hotel meals, but you should confirm availability and booking requirements directly with each operator.

Do not extend London’s transport position to other cities. Plan each part of the day in this order:

  1. Decide whether you want company, activity, quiet or a change of scenery.
  2. Check the opening information for each venue on the exact date, not just the holiday in general.
  3. Confirm how you will travel, or plan activities within walking distance if buses and trains are not running.
  4. Book meals and ticketed activities directly with the operator where reservations are required.
  5. Choose a home-based fallback in case weather, transport or availability changes.

Keeping the day low-pressure

Holiday messages and invitations can come from people who assume everyone is celebrating. You do not owe anyone a detailed explanation. A short, friendly reply that says what you are doing is usually enough, such as “I’m going for a long walk and then having a quiet afternoon.” If you are working on the day, the same planning steps apply, with the addition of checking your employer’s rota and any holiday pay rules where you live.

Building a day around what you enjoy, rather than around what is missing, tends to produce a better result than trying to recreate Christmas without it.

Finally, keep the plan flexible. Something you chose for its quiet can turn into a lovely outing, and a planned visit can close without notice.

”

The Bottom Line

There is no single correct way to spend Christmas Day if you don’t celebrate it. Pick the type of day that suits you, then confirm opening hours, transport and bookings for the exact date before you set out.
