What Is an Oscillator in Music? How Synth Oscillators Set Pitch and Tone

In a synthesizer, the oscillator generates the repeating waveform that a sound starts from. Its frequency sets pitch and its waveform shapes tone.

In music, the word “oscillator” most often refers to the sound-generating part of an electronic instrument, especially a synthesizer. An oscillator produces a repeating waveform. The rate at which that waveform repeats sets the pitch, and its shape sets the basic tone, or timbre. Filters, envelopes, modulation, and effects then reshape that starting signal into the sound you hear.

Where the term fits

Outside of electronic music, a musical instrument’s sound source is usually a vibrating string, reed, column of air, or membrane. A synthesizer has no such physical body to set in motion. Its sound source is an electronic circuit or calculation that generates a signal. Roland’s beginner guide to subtractive synthesis puts it plainly: “An oscillator generates a repeating signal in a particular waveform.” Novation describes the same role as generating an electronic wave at a controllable musical pitch.

A useful way to picture it is as the raw sound material, similar to the tone an acoustic instrument starts with before its body, room, and player shape it. The comparison is only approximate. An oscillator does not vibrate anything; it generates or calculates a signal that repeats over time.

How an oscillator sets pitch

Pitch depends on frequency, which is the number of times a periodic signal repeats each second. Frequency is measured in hertz (Hz). Pitch is the perception that goes with that frequency. Yamaha’s terminology guide uses A4 at 440 Hz as its tuning reference, which is a convention for tuning and not a universal definition of what an oscillator is. Raising the oscillator’s frequency raises the pitch of the note it plays.

On most synthesizers, the oscillator’s frequency follows the note you play, then gets offset by tuning controls. Ableton’s Live Instrument Reference (Version 12) describes coarse and fine controls that set the relationship between oscillator frequency and note pitch. Coarse tuning usually moves the pitch in larger steps, such as semitones, while fine tuning makes smaller adjustments. Both are offsets from the played note rather than separate sound sources.

How waveform shape affects tone

The waveform is the shape of the signal over one cycle. Shape determines which harmonics, or overtones, are present, and harmonic content is what we hear as timbre. Yamaha lists sine, triangle, sawtooth, square, and pulse as typical waveforms on subtractive synthesizers, and Apple’s Logic Pro documentation lists the same set. The table below gives the general tendency of each. Treat it as a starting point, because filtering and processing can change the result considerably.

Waveform General harmonic character Typical tonal impression
Sine A single fundamental tone with no added overtones Pure, soft, flute-like or sub-bass tones
Triangle Odd harmonics, which fall off quickly in level Mellow, slightly hollow
Square Odd harmonics at relatively strong levels Hollow, woody, clarinet-like
Pulse Harmonics that depend on the pulse width; a 50 percent width produces a square wave Nasal or reedy, and it changes as the width is adjusted
Sawtooth All harmonics, decreasing in level as they rise Bright, buzzy, and strong for brass and string-like sounds

The table describes tendencies that come from the waveform’s mathematics. A synthesizer’s output also depends on the filter that removes part of the harmonic content, the amplitude envelope, and the level of the oscillator itself.

What else shapes the final sound

An oscillator supplies the source, and the rest of the synthesizer shapes it. The main stages that usually follow it are:

  1. Filter. In subtractive synthesis, the filter removes portions of the waveform’s frequency content, which can make a bright sawtooth duller or a sine more present.
  2. Envelopes. An amplitude envelope controls how loudness changes over the life of a note, and a filter envelope can change tone over time.
  3. Modulation. Low-frequency oscillators and other controls can move parameters such as pitch, filter cutoff, or level.
  4. Mixing with other oscillators. Most synthesizers offer multiple oscillators that can be tuned differently and combined to create a thicker tone.
  5. Effects. Delay, reverb, chorus, and similar effects are applied after the sound has been generated and shaped.

For this reason, the waveform should be read as a strong influence on tone rather than the whole sound.

Analog, digital, and sample-based oscillators

“Oscillator” describes a function, not one particular circuit. Different instruments generate the signal in different ways.

Analog oscillators

Apple explains that analog synthesizers use voltage-controlled circuits. In analog synthesizers, the oscillator is often called a VCO, or voltage-controlled oscillator, and its pitch is set by a control voltage. The term VCO belongs to analog designs, so it should not be used as a generic name for every oscillator.

Digital oscillators

Apple notes that digital synthesizers process binary descriptions of signals. A digital oscillator calculates its waveform mathematically rather than using a voltage-controlled circuit, and the instrument still presents it as an oscillator section with pitch and waveform controls.

Sample-based oscillators

Yamaha notes that in many digital synthesizers an oscillator can play back a stored sample as its waveform. The oscillator in this case is a playback engine, and the timbre comes from the recorded material. Pitch is still controlled by the oscillator’s frequency setting.

The LFO is a different kind of oscillator

A low-frequency oscillator, or LFO, is also called an oscillator, but it is usually not the sound source. An LFO repeats at a slow rate, often below the range of audible pitch, and commonly modulates another parameter over time. If an LFO controls oscillator frequency, the result is a repeated pitch movement, which is vibrato. If it controls filter cutoff, the tone moves in a similar cycle. The rate of modulation is a common use, not a fixed technical limit, so instruments differ in how they route and range their LFOs.

Quick checks when reading a synth’s oscillator section

  • Identify the waveform selector and the shapes it offers, such as sine, triangle, square or pulse, and sawtooth.
  • Look for coarse and fine tuning controls, and check whether they are offsets from the played note.
  • Check the oscillator level, since it sets how much of this source reaches the rest of the signal path.
  • Determine whether a control is audio-rate (the sound source) or slower (an LFO or other modulation source).
  • If the instrument offers several oscillators, compare their tuning and waveforms to understand how they combine.
