In the two animated episodes that name Sonic’s fear directly, that fear is water. In Sonic Underground’s “The Deepest Fear,” Sonic says he cannot swim. In Sonic Boom’s “I Can Sea Sonic’s Fear From Here,” water is the episode’s stated fear and drives its conflict. That answer describes those cartoon portrayals. It is not a single rule that holds across every game, comic, or television version of the character.
The short answer
Sonic’s fear, as the two episodes present it, is water, and specifically deep water he cannot swim in. Both episodes treat the fear as a characterization that the hero has to overcome in the story, which is why they are the clearest examples of the answer.
Sonic Underground: “The Deepest Fear”
Apple TV’s episode listing gives “The Deepest Fear” as season 1, episode 7 of Sonic Underground, released September 7, 1999, with a runtime of 21 minutes. The listing summarizes the plot: the hedgehogs travel to Port Mobius, learn that ships are sinking, and Sonic must overcome his fear of water and the sea monster behind the attacks.
The episode states the fear in Sonic’s own words. Transcript pages for the episode, maintained by the fan site Sonic Wiki Zone, record the line:
#1 Best Overall
- Sonic The Hedgehog Sonic 3 Movie 5" Action Figures: Sonic With Emerald Wave #3
- “It’s wet, it’s deep, and well, I can’t swim.”
- “Being afraid, no biggie, as long as you don’t let it slow you down.”
The episode places that fear in a dangerous water setting. Sonic hesitates over a boat trip, and his worry is about deep water rather than water in general. The sources reviewed do not say whether the episode distinguishes between wading, swimming, and drowning.
Sonic Boom: “I Can Sea Sonic’s Fear From Here”
The Apple TV listing for this Sonic Boom episode describes Sonic overcoming his water phobia. Its wording is broader than the Underground episode’s: the episode itself labels water as the fear, rather than explaining a specific swimming limitation. The episode uses that fear as the premise of an underwater conflict.

How the two portrayals compare
| Point of comparison | Sonic Underground, “The Deepest Fear” | Sonic Boom, “I Can Sea Sonic’s Fear From Here” |
|---|---|---|
| Series | Sonic Underground | Sonic Boom |
| Release date | September 7, 1999 (Apple TV listing) | Not stated in the sources reviewed |
| Runtime | 21 minutes (Apple TV listing) | Not stated in the sources reviewed |
| How the fear is named | Sonic says he cannot swim and that the water is deep | The episode labels water as Sonic’s fear and Eggman states it outright |
| Scope of the fear | Deep water, linked to not being able to swim | Water in general, as described in the listing and dialogue |
| Role in the plot | A boat-trip hesitation and a sea monster the hero must face | The premise of an underwater conflict |
The two episodes agree on the core answer. They differ in how precisely they define the fear: one ties it to swimming ability and depth, while the other treats water as the fear itself.

What the sources do not settle
- Other versions. No official cross-continuity statement about Sonic’s fear was found, so the answer should not be extended to the games, comics, or other shows without separate evidence.
- Degree of fear. The sources do not establish whether the characterization applies equally to shallow water, to swimming as an activity, or to drowning.
- Clinical terms. The Sonic Boom listing uses the word “phobia.” Neither episode supports a clinical diagnosis, and this article does not use one.
- Exact wording. The quoted lines come from fan-maintained transcripts, not official scripts. Check the wording against the episode before quoting it in print.
- Fan art and galleries. SEGA’s Sonic Channel material that surfaced in searches was fan-gallery commentary rather than an official character profile, so it does not settle the question.
For a reader who wants the fear as it appears on screen, the two episodes above are the places to start. Each is short, and the moment the fear is named is early in the plot.
