The investigation becomes personal when Lee discovers that her mother, Ruth, has been helping Longlegs. Ruth delivered dolls to households targeted by the scheme and concealed from Lee that she herself had once been among its intended victims. Her bargain spared Lee, but helped make the other crimes possible.
What do the dolls do?
In the film’s plot, the dolls are the means by which the killings’ supernatural influence reaches the families. They connect Longlegs’ coded messages and the victims’ homes to the crimes. The movie presents this as part of its fictional horror story, not as a claim about real-world occult practices.

What happens at the end?
In the final sequence, Ruth continues the arrangement at Agent Carter’s family home. Lee arrives after the family has fallen under the dolls’ influence. She shoots Carter and Ruth, but when she tries to destroy the doll connected to Carter’s daughter, her gun is empty. The doll remains, and the immediate threat is unresolved.
Is Lee possessed or the next Longlegs?
The film does not confirm that Lee becomes Longlegs’ successor, nor does it settle exactly what happens to her after the final scene. A possession reading is one possible interpretation, but it goes beyond what the ending explicitly establishes. The concrete events are Lee’s actions, the empty gun, and the surviving doll; her future remains open.

What does the ending mean?
The ending turns the investigation into a family tragedy: Ruth’s attempt to protect Lee involved hiding the truth and helping Longlegs harm other families. Perkins has described the story’s starting point as a parent creating a protective lie or narrative for a child. That idea supports a reading of the film as a warning about how protection can become complicity and harm, but it is not the only possible interpretation of the supernatural ending.
Perkins described the film as “a horror movie mixtape” in comments on NEON’s official film page. That description fits its blend of crime investigation, family drama, and occult horror without resolving the final scene’s ambiguity.
