In music, forte means loud or strong. It is a dynamic marking that tells a performer to play or sing the marked passage with greater sound intensity. In a score it is almost always written as a lowercase f.

What the marking tells a performer

Forte belongs to the family of dynamic markings, which describe how loudly or softly notes should be played. Treccani’s Italian dictionary defines it as a musical direction prescribing execution with great sound intensity. The OnMusic Dictionary entry for forte gives the same idea in plainer terms: a directive to perform the indicated passage loudly. The Italian word itself carries the sense of “strong,” and that is worth remembering, because it explains why the marking describes force of sound rather than a fixed volume.

How to read the f in a score

When you see f printed under or above a staff, follow these steps:

  1. Identify the scope. The marking applies to the notes that follow it, until another dynamic mark changes the level.
  2. Check for neighbouring markings. A passage marked f may be followed by ff (louder) or mf (less loud), and the change tells you the direction of the shift.
  3. Adjust to the instrument or voice. The same written f sounds different on a flute, a tuba or a choir, because each has its own natural range of loudness.
  4. Play it as a relative level. Forte means louder than the surrounding dynamics, not a particular decibel reading.

Where forte sits among the dynamic levels

Dynamics run from soft to loud, and each step has a standard abbreviation. The Open University’s selected list of performance directions gives the sequence from ppp and pp through p, mp, mf, f, ff and fff. The table below covers the four markings most beginners meet first.

Marking Usual plain-English sense Common notation
piano soft p
mezzoforte moderately loud mf
forte loud or strong f
fortissimo very loud, greater intensity than forte ff or fff

These are interpretive levels, not measured sound pressures. A forte in a quiet chamber piece and a forte in a full orchestral tutti will not be the same number of decibels.

Why no fixed volume figure exists

Readers often look for a decibel value, but the standard reference works do not give one. Forte is defined as a direction to the performer, and its effect depends on the passage, the instrument or voice, the acoustics of the room and the surrounding dynamics. A score can ask for forte in one place and fortissimo a few bars later, and both remain relative to what came before. Treat forte as a position on a scale rather than a unit of measurement.

The Italian meaning versus the everyday English sense

Outside music, “forte” in English usually means someone’s strength or strong point, as in “chemistry is not my forte.” That everyday use shares the root idea of strength, but in a score it is only a dynamic instruction. Keeping the two senses apart avoids confusion when you read a musical text or a conversation about music.

Historical note on the letter f

Guido Pannain’s entry in the Enciclopedia Italiana (1931), printed under the Treccani heading “Dinamica,” explains that the initial letter F of forte was used to signal an increase in sound intensity, paired with P from piano for a decrease. The entry also discusses the paired ff and pp markings. The historical background helps explain the letter, but the working definition for a modern reader remains that f means loud or strong.
