A crossword puzzle is a word game in which you enter answers into a grid, working from written clues. In the familiar newspaper format, answers run either Across (left to right) or Down (top to bottom), and the two directions share squares where they meet. Each letter you place therefore helps confirm or rule out the word running through it in the other direction.

The parts of a crossword

A standard crossword has three working parts: the grid, the answer entries, and the clues. The grid is a set of white squares, where letters go, separated by solid black squares. Each run of white squares that forms a word or phrase is an entry. A number in a white square marks where an entry begins, and that same number is used for the matching clue.

Clues are printed in two lists, one labelled Across and one labelled Down. A numbered square can start an Across entry, a Down entry, or both. The New York Times Help Center describes its daily puzzle in these terms:

“The New York Times Crossword is a daily word puzzle that invites you to fill the grid with intersecting words and phrases by solving clues that run Across and Down.”

That description is the publisher’s own, and it names no individual author. Other puzzle publishers use different layouts and clue conventions, so the details below describe the common newspaper style rather than a universal standard.

Why the crossings matter

The intersections are what turn a list of trivia questions into a puzzle. Suppose a five-letter Across entry has a plausible answer, but the first letter of the Down entry that crosses it at that square is already fixed as a letter that answer does not begin with. The Across guess must be wrong, or the Down entry must be. Solvers constantly test candidate words against the letters already placed, which is why a single confident answer can unlock several others.

This is also why a puzzle can feel stuck at the start and then open up quickly. Early answers provide the letters that make harder clues solvable.

The kinds of clues you will meet

Clues are not all alike. A 2022 paper from the Association for Computational Linguistics, which introduced crossword solving as a benchmark for language software, sorts the clues in its dataset into the categories below. These describe clue types found in that dataset; they are not a complete rulebook that applies to every puzzle.

Clue type What the solver has to do
Factual Recall a fact, such as a name, place, or date
Word meaning Supply a word that matches a definition
Synonym or antonym Find a word with a similar or opposite meaning to the clue word
Fill-in-the-blank Complete a familiar phrase, quotation, or title
Abbreviation Give the short form of a term, often signalled by an abbreviation in the clue
Prefix or suffix Supply a word part that attaches to the clue word
Wordplay Solve a clue that depends on the way words sound, are spelled, or are built
Cross-lingual Use knowledge of a word or name from another language
Cross-dependent Depend on the answer to another entry, so the solver needs a crossing first

Many newspaper clues mix categories. A single clue may be a fill-in-the-blank that also turns on a pun, so the table is best read as a set of habits to recognise rather than labels that are always clear-cut.

How to solve a crossword: a beginner’s sequence

  1. Start with a publisher’s introductory guide. The New York Times Games help page, which is undated in the version consulted, points readers to a solving guide for its crossword.
  2. Practise on easier puzzles first. The same help page points to free Mini puzzles for shorter practice.
  3. Read each clue and note its length. The number of squares in the entry is a strict constraint, so a seven-letter answer must fit exactly.
  4. Enter the answers you are sure of, and leave the rest blank rather than guessing into the grid.
  5. Test uncertain answers against their crossings. If a letter from a crossing entry contradicts a candidate, drop the candidate and try another.
  6. Watch for signals in the clue. A question mark often means wordplay, an abbreviation or a fill-in-the-blank frequently points to a fixed form, and a clue that refers to another entry may only be solvable after its crossing.

This approach follows from the intersecting structure of the grid. It is a practical method, not a rule that every publisher prescribes.

How crosswords are constructed

Crosswords are designed as well as solved. A December 2002 interview published by the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament describes one constructor’s workflow. It is a single account, not a universal standard, but it shows the logic of building a grid:

  1. Place the long answers first, since they set the structure of the rest of the grid.
  2. Place black squares around those answers to create the word breaks.
  3. Fill the remaining entries so that every crossing works.
  4. Polish the grid, replacing weak or obscure fill where a better word fits.
  5. Write the clues last, once the answers are fixed.

Where crosswords came from, and what remains uncertain

A March 1997 history article from the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament traces the growth of crossword popularity and the early crossword puzzle book. Those sources do not establish a precise first-publication date, and they do not settle questions about earlier word puzzles that resemble crosswords. Any article that names a single inventor or an exact founding date should be checked against primary archival material first.

Print books and digital puzzles

Crossword puzzle books are an established printed format for readers who prefer solving on paper. This article does not recommend particular current titles, editions, or sellers. Digital puzzles are also widely available, including the New York Times daily crossword and its Mini, which the publisher’s help pages describe as available to solve online. Both formats use the same grid-and-clue structure, so the solving skills above transfer between them.
