What You Didn’t Know About the Cars in Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift

More than 200 cars helped bring Tokyo Drift to the screen, including Japanese-market imports, drift-modified Zs and Evos, and six differently configured Mustang fastbacks.

The cars in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift were production-built assets, not a single set of showroom vehicles. The 2006 film’s team sourced Japanese-market cars to help Southern California look like Tokyo, modified some for drift stunts, and used multiple copies for crashes and continuity. Most importantly, the six 1967 Mustang fastbacks made for the finale did not all share the same engine: one carried the Nissan RB26DETT that the story required, while five had V8s.

Why did a film set in Tokyo use so many cars from Southern California?

Although the story is set in Japan, much of the film—and virtually all of its action—was shot in Southern California. Picture-car coordinator Dennis McCarthy told Edmunds in 2006 that the production went to Japan to acquire Japanese-market vehicles and bring them back. Right-hand-drive cars and models associated with Japan helped sell the setting on screen.

McCarthy said the production had more than 200 cars, sourced from different places. That figure describes the scale of the film’s vehicle operation, not a complete inventory of surviving cars or a count of only the featured drift vehicles.

Cars sourced for the film

Edmunds reported that the Japanese-market vehicles included Nissan 350Zs, Mazda RX-7s and RX-8s, Toyota Chasers, Nissan Silvias, and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IXs. The production reportedly used 11 350Zs, including three bought locally for crash scenes, and 10 Lancer Evolution IXs were contributed to the project. These period production counts are not a catalog of every background car.

How were the featured cars chosen and prepared?

The cars were selected and developed as part of the filmmaking process. McCarthy described considering several candidates for each character with director Justin Lin. The Nissan 350Z chosen for D.K. was among the early decisions; a VeilSide-converted example helped guide its look. The production then fabricated vehicles in a Glendale warehouse, rather than simply taking finished cars from a dealership lot.

Some vehicles also received mechanical changes to make them perform for the camera. Edmunds reported that two 350Zs had APS twin-turbo systems, producing around 475 horsepower, and Nismo limited-slip differentials. The Lancer Evolution IXs were converted from all-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive for drift work. These details apply to the reported builds; duplicate cars could differ, and they do not establish that every maneuver in the finished film was captured in a single unaltered take.

What engine was in Sean’s Mustang?

For the final showdown, the production built six 1967 Ford Mustang fastbacks. According to Edmunds’ 2006 production report, five had V8 engines. The sixth was fitted with a Nissan Skyline GT-R’s RB26DETT, a turbocharged 2.6-liter straight-six, to match the film’s story about Sean’s car.

So the short answer is that the RB26 Mustang was real as a film build, but it is inaccurate to say every Mustang used in the production had that engine. Multiple copies supported stunt work and simultaneous filming needs, and the surviving cars have not all had identical configurations.

What did a surviving RB26 Mustang achieve?

Hot Rod later tested one surviving modified RB26 Mustang, reporting 340 horsepower at the rear wheels, a 0–60 mph time of 5.38 seconds, and a quarter-mile run of 13.36 seconds at 109.83 mph. Those are test results for that particular car, not factory figures, a universal specification for the film’s Mustangs, or proof that every duplicate had the same setup. The account is available at Hot Rod.

Is Han’s RX-7 available as a collectible?

Takara Tomy documented a film-specific Tomica Premium Unlimited miniature of the Mazda RX-7 VeilSide driven by Han. The manufacturer says the model reproduces the customized body and wheels. Its dimensions are 33.8 × 21.3 × 73.4 mm. Takara Tomy announced a Japan launch date of November 20, 2021, and a suggested retail price of JPY 1,320 including tax; those are historical launch details, not a statement of present-day price or availability. Why did the production need so many copies of its hero cars?

A hero car seen repeatedly on screen may be represented by several physical vehicles. A clean car can serve for close-ups, while other copies take impacts, perform stunts, or allow different filming units to work at once. That practical need helps explain why the six Mustangs could have varied drivetrains and why reported specifications should be tied to a specific build rather than treated as a single definitive fleet-wide spec.

  • NISSAN 350Z CUSTOM: Features the legendary Nissan 350Z Custom as seen in the Fast & Furious film series, complete with signature graphics and detailing.

  • DISPLAY-READY PACKAGING: Comes in premium blister card packaging featuring Fast & Furious branding, ideal for collectors to display or gift.

The same distinction matters for the modified imports: production reporting documents particular changes, but does not imply every duplicate was identically prepared. The finished sequence may also combine different takes and editing; the existence of working stunt cars is not evidence that every screen action is untouched footage.

Sources and scope

The vehicle counts and build descriptions here are drawn chiefly from Edmunds’ 2006 interview with picture-car coordinator Dennis McCarthy, supplemented by Hot Rod’s test of one surviving Mustang and Takara Tomy’s 2021 product announcement. These sources establish period production reporting and a later test of one car; they do not establish a current inventory of surviving vehicles or present-day collectible availability.
