She revealed that she was Lady Whistledown, married Colin, and continued publishing under her own name. Season 4 later showed her retiring the column—and then brought Lady Whistledown back with a new, still-unidentified author.
Where Season 3 left Penelope and the column
In the Season 3 finale, Penelope reveals her identity to the ton. Queen Charlotte accepts her plea to continue writing, and the closing flash-forward shows Penelope and Colin with their son. Penelope’s final column is signed with her own name: she has stopped hiding behind the Lady Whistledown pseudonym, but she has not stopped writing. Netflix’s Season 3 ending recap establishes that distinction.
That was also how showrunner Jess Brownell framed the ending in a 2024 interview: “She’s retired her persona as Lady Whistledown, but that doesn’t mean she’s retired the column.” Brownell said the creative team was considering Penelope’s own voice for narration, while noting that they loved Julie Andrews and might find a reason for her to continue voicing Lady Whistledown. Those were possibilities at the time, not a preview of the eventual Season 4 outcome. TVLine published Brownell’s comments on June 13, 2024.
What Season 4 changed
Season 4 showed why Penelope’s public authorship made the column difficult to continue. Her new standing in society changes what people will tell her and limits the freedom that had fueled her writing. She also has to reckon more directly with the damage gossip can cause, including the consequences of a story affecting Virginia, a woman seeking financial security.

Penelope recognizes that her position has changed: “But since I have become known publicly, there has been a change. The power I hold over the ton is too great.” She also says, “I am a Bridgerton. I’m privileged to visit the queen.” Netflix’s official Season 4 explainer, published March 2, 2026, says Penelope retires the column midway through the season.
Who is the new Lady Whistledown?
Lady Whistledown returns in the Season 4 finale, but not as Penelope’s column: the newsletter has a new author. Netflix says that person’s identity is unknown. Brownell describes the reveal as a new storyline beyond the identity established in Julia Quinn’s novels, so any proposed name remains speculation unless Netflix confirms it. Julie Andrews voices the new author’s announcement.

For book-to-screen context, the Penelope and Colin story appears in Julia Quinn’s Romancing Mister Bridgerton; the new television author is a separate development.

Season 3 ended with Penelope writing openly as herself. Season 4 then gave her a reason to retire the column and ended by reviving Lady Whistledown under anonymous new authorship. Netflix’s guide lists Seasons 1–4 as streaming and Season 5 as filming; those release and production details can change. Check Netflix’s current Season 4 guide for the latest status.
