She was too young to build the kind of remembered mother-daughter relationship an older child might describe. Instead, Hargitay has said, she grew up wrestling with Mansfield’s public image and later tried to understand the woman behind it. Making her documentary My Mom Jayne helped her see her mother with greater sympathy and changed how she told their story.
Did Mariska Hargitay know her mother, Jayne Mansfield?
Hargitay was three years old when Mansfield died in a car crash in 1967. Hargitay and two of her siblings were in the vehicle; the Los Angeles Times reported that Mariska was asleep in the back seat. At that age, she could not know her mother through the sustained memories and conversations that shape an older child’s understanding.
So the relationship is better understood as one Hargitay later had to piece together than as a close bond she could recall in detail. She has said that her feelings about Mansfield were difficult to understand and express. Her account centers on absence, inherited impressions, and the work of learning more—not on a claim that she remembers a fully formed relationship.
How did Mansfield’s public image shape Hargitay’s childhood view?
As a child, Hargitay wished for a more conventional, home-centered mother. In a 2025 Los Angeles Times interview, she recalled wanting “a normal mom that stayed home and baked cookies” rather than one associated with the highly visible, glamorous persona Mansfield performed in public.

That was Hargitay’s description of her own childhood longing, not proof that Mansfield was simply one-dimensional or that the public image captured her private life. The distance between the mother Hargitay wished for and the famous figure she knew about became part of what she later set out to examine.
What changed Hargitay’s perspective as an adult?
As she learned more about Mansfield’s life, Hargitay began to consider the pressures and ambitions facing her mother as a young woman raising children while pursuing a career. She has described seeing Mansfield’s move toward California as bold and said that combining children, work, and adult responsibilities is difficult. That is Hargitay’s later interpretation of her mother’s choices, rather than a definitive account of Mansfield’s inner life.

In the same interview, Hargitay said, “I look at her a little bit like a superhero and go, ‘I don’t think I could have done that.’” The change was not a discovery that Mansfield had been an ideal parent; it was a more generous way for Hargitay to understand the woman and the circumstances behind the image.

Directed by Hargitay, My Mom Jayne draws on interviews, photographs, and home movies to consider Mansfield’s public and private legacy. The process gave Hargitay material with which to build a fuller account than her childhood impressions alone could provide. She told the Los Angeles Times, “The process of making this film has been so extraordinary to me and totally reframed the narrative for me.”
