In the familiar account, Walt Disney’s wife, Lillian, objected to that name and suggested Mickey instead. The naming story is an anecdote, not a contemporary record from 1928.
Why was Mortimer considered?
The Walt Disney Family Museum’s 2010 article, “You’ve Come A Long Way, Mickey!”, recounts Walt Disney’s version of the naming story: “And then the name came. I had Mortimer first and my wife shook her head, and then I tried Mickey and she shook her head the other way, and that was it!” The article also reports Lillian’s recollection that Walt had been talking about “a mouse.” These are later recollections, not a documented transcript of a naming conversation in 1928. Read the Walt Disney Family Museum account.
D23 presents the story with the qualification “According to legend”: Walt came up with Mortimer, Lillian thought it too pretentious, and she suggested Mickey. The Smithsonian National Museum of American History also describes Mortimer as one story about the name. Together, these accounts support the familiar answer while leaving its precise origin anecdotal. D23’s Mickey Mouse reference · Smithsonian National Museum of American History’s account.
When did Mickey Mouse make his public debut?
The naming anecdote is separate from the character’s public debut. D23 and the Smithsonian date the premiere of Steamboat Willie at New York’s Colony Theatre to November 18, 1928. That is the public-release milestone; it should not be confused with when the character was first devised or when earlier shorts were produced.
