The Bible doesn’t say what species the fish were. The Gospel accounts describe two fish, but neither names a kind. John adds that the five loaves were barley loaves; a commentary’s interpretation of John’s Greek suggests the fish may have been dried or pickled, but it does not identify a species.
What do the Gospel accounts say?
Mark 6:38–44 describes Jesus distributing five loaves and two fish to the crowd. The people eat until satisfied, and the disciples gather twelve baskets of leftovers. Mark says five thousand males were counted; the passage does not name the fish species. Mark 6:38–44.
John 6:9 also records two fish, in a scene where a boy has five barley loaves and the fish. John is the account that specifies barley. It, too, leaves the fish unidentified. John 6:9.
Why do some explanations describe the fish as dried or pickled?
The Gospel writers use different Greek words for fish: Mark uses ichthýas, while John uses opsária. The International Critical Commentary interprets John’s term in this passage as referring to dried or pickled fish. That is a commentary’s reading of the wording, not a species identification, and the Gospel accounts do not describe how the fish were prepared. International Critical Commentary on John.

Does the meal’s historical context identify the fish?
No. A 2015 article in the Journal of Theological Studies interprets the fish as a complement or topping for bread and places the meal in the context of public food distributions in the Greco-Roman world. That interpretation offers a way to understand the meal, but it does not establish what species was served. Journal of Theological Studies article abstract.
What is the most accurate answer?
The fish were unspecified. The texts support saying there were two fish, and John identifies the loaves as barley. A claim that they were tilapia—or any other particular species—goes beyond what these Gospel passages and the cited commentary establish.
