Spoilers for all of House of the Dragon Season 3. The season premiered in the United States on June 21, 2026, and is no longer upcoming. It opens with the Battle of the Gullet, then follows the costs of open war as control and loyalties shift. George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood supplies the broad historical waypoints, but not a scene-by-scene script for the series.
What happens in Season 3?
Season 3 pushes the Dance of the Dragons into open, costly warfare. Showrunner Ryan Condal said the season begins with the Battle of the Gullet, moved from the end of Season 2 to the beginning of Season 3 as a structural choice. He said the change did not alter the team’s overall plan for the story. GamesRadar+ interviewed Condal on June 19, 2026.
Post-finale coverage reports that Jacaerys Velaryon dies in the Gullet and that Rhaenyra later takes King’s Landing. The finale brings the conflict to Tumbleton, while the war’s reach extends beyond the central claimants. These are events reported from the aired series, not outcomes that can be assumed from the book alone. TheWrap’s Season 3 ending explainer discusses the finale and its departures from the source; TV Guide’s finale review covers the Gullet and Rhaenyra’s move on King’s Landing.
HBO’s official trailer description says the balance of power shifts, loyalties fracture, bonds change, and new players enter the conflict. That is a broad season-level description, not a complete episode guide. HBO’s series page carries the official trailer summary.

What does Fire & Blood tell you about the season?
Fire & Blood is presented as a history of the Targaryens, not as a conventional screenplay with every scene and conversation recorded. Condal described it as a “Rashomon fake-history telling,” with details that can be “very scant” or absent. That leaves the television writers room to interpret what happened between major events and invent connective material while using the book’s larger history as a foundation.
Condal also described the adaptation problem posed by Rhaenyra: “And I think the character in the book is incredibly inactive and shuts herself away from the battle in a big way for much of the story.” He framed the series’ task as honoring that characterization while giving her a compelling television arc. In his words, the gaps allow “a tremendous amount of latitude for growth and invention” alongside a faithful rendering that remains distinctively the show’s. Condal’s GamesRadar+ interview discusses the source’s gaps and the adaptation choices.

Where the show and book may differ
Event order and pacing
The clearest example is the Gullet: Condal said the series moved the battle to the season opener from its position at the end of Season 2. The shift changes when viewers encounter the event, not, in Condal’s account, the team’s overall story plan.
Character agency
The show can dramatize decisions and activity that a historical account describes briefly or leaves out. Rhaenyra’s portrayal is one area Condal singled out; do not assume that the book’s level of detail dictates how much screen time or agency a character receives.

Invented connective tissue
Where the source does not establish exactly how people reached a known outcome, the adaptation can supply its own scenes, motives, and transitions. Season 3’s finale coverage also reports substantial departures from the source history, so a book event should not be treated as a guarantee of the show’s exact version.

- Use Fire & Blood for broad historical waypoints, motives, and consequences.
- Expect the series to change pacing and dramatize gaps in the account.
- Do not count on an individual episode, battle, or character decision appearing unchanged on screen.
