He said the original shop had grown until he was managing people instead of building; later reporting places him in Dripping Springs, Texas, still working on motorcycles and vehicles as well as firearms and knives.
Why did the original West Coast Choppers operation close?
James’s explanation was that the California shop had become too large for the work he wanted to do. In an interview with Sturgis Rider Daily, he said: “There were so many people, I was like a manager and I didn’t work anymore. That’s what put me on the map, my work and my skills, so I shut down the big operation, came here (to Texas) for a couple years and made it way smaller to get back to work.”

That account describes closing the large operation and changing the business’s scale and location. It does not establish that West Coast Choppers went bankrupt, was sold, or disappeared entirely.
How did West Coast Choppers start and become famous?
A Haas Automation profile reports that West Coast Choppers began in 1992 in James’s mother’s garage before expanding to dedicated premises. The date is a reported founding date, not a current corporate filing.
#1 Best Overall
- Where It Started – Long Beach, CA - This isn’t a design. It’s history. The original Iron Cross logo from Long Beach — worn by those who never asked for permission and never needed approval.
- Not Just for Riders - West Coast Choppers isn’t about motorcycles. It’s about rebellion. Whether you ride, build, skate, or just don’t fit the mold — this is part of that same mindset.
- Heavyweight Cotton – No Weak Stuff - Made from solid 100% cotton. Not thin, not disposable. Built to take a beating and keep its shape.
- Fit That Actually Works - No gimmicks. No weird cuts. Just a straight, true-to-size fit that fits right and moves with you.
- Built to Last – Just Like It Should Be - Durable screen print that doesn’t crack or fade. Wear it hard, wash it often — it holds up.
The same profile says Discovery’s Motorcycle Mania specials aired in 2001 and led to Monster Garage, bringing James and the shop to a much wider audience. Discovery later announced a revival season with James, but that historical announcement does not establish where the show is available to stream today.
What did the smaller WCC look like?
James described a soft relaunch focused on parts and frames, with a much smaller team. At the time of his interview, he said the bike department had five or six people and that the shop was building three or four highly detailed custom bikes a year. Those are historical figures from that interview, not a current staffing or production count.

A 2013 Hot Bike feature also described West Coast Choppers returning from Austin as a small-run operation making handmade parts and frames. James put the point of the scale-down plainly: “We never stopped building custom bikes but we got down to only three or four a year, bikes that were really nice and detailed, putting more labor and more skills into it.”
What is Jesse James doing now?
A profile published March 3, 2026, by Texas Monthly places James in Dripping Springs, Texas. It reports that he works there with West Coast Choppers, Jesse James Firearms Unlimited and Jesse James Culinary, and describes work involving motorcycles, vehicles, custom firearms and knives. That is a dated snapshot of his reported work, not a guarantee that every venture or product remains unchanged.

Is West Coast Choppers still around?
The brand remains publicly present: the official West Coast Choppers store lists apparel and riding gear. A store confirms a current brand and merchandise presence, but does not by itself establish the availability of specific parts, frames or custom builds.
The most accurate distinction is between the large California operation that James said he shut down and the smaller continuation of WCC he described afterward. Available accounts support a closure and relaunch at a different scale—not a proven bankruptcy or complete end to the brand.
