Robert Pattinson has made jokes about Twilight’s premise and spoken about being surprised by its enormous audience, but his public comments do not amount to a simple verdict that the films were “not good.” Across interviews from 2009 to 2020, he described trying to make the movies as intelligent as he could, expressed confusion about the anger directed at them, and later saw them in unexpectedly art-house terms.
Did Robert Pattinson hate Twilight?
His interviews do not establish that he hated the films. The sharper comments are often jokes about Edward or the series’ setup; they sit alongside remarks about the care he took with the role and his bemusement at the scale of the backlash. It is more accurate to say he has spoken about the franchise with irony and distance than to treat every joke as a wholesale condemnation.
What he said while the franchise was taking off
2009: He tried to avoid making the films feel cheesy
In a TIME interview published November 17, 2009, as New Moon was arriving, Pattinson said he had not anticipated the intensity of the audience’s devotion. He also said he did not want to turn his association with a teen franchise into a public fight. Describing his approach to the movies, he said: “I’ve tried to make the films as intelligent and uncheesy as you could.”
2011: He expected a serious independent film, not a phenomenon
In a Guardian profile published November 6, 2011, Pattinson said he had expected Twilight to be a “really serious” independent film and had not foreseen its mass-market reach. The profile set that surprise against the more challenging work he was pursuing at the time, including David Cronenberg’s Cosmopolis.

How he discussed Edward and the franchise’s end
2019: The school-years joke was about Edward’s premise
On NPR’s Fresh Air, in an interview published November 18, 2019, Pattinson said he felt nervous when the franchise ended because the sequels had provided a safety net. When Terry Gross asked about Edward repeatedly attending high school, he joked: “Like, normal people drop out of school. Like, what is he hoping to achieve? He’s in the same year.” The quip targets the character’s implausible school routine; it is not, by itself, a statement that he hated the films. In the same interview, he said he still absolutely loved Cosmopolis.
2019: He did not understand the anger at the films
In The Irish Times interview published October 18, 2019, Pattinson said: “People are very angry about Twilight. I never understood it.” That comment speaks to his reaction to the backlash around the franchise, not a claim that every part of the films worked for him.

How his view sounded later
2020: He described the films as unexpectedly art-house
In GQ’s 2020 profile, “Robert Pattinson on Being Batman, ‘Tenet,’ and Life in Isolation, he reflected that the Twilight films could seem, in some ways, more like “existential art house movies” than films intentionally made in that mode. The profile’s phrasing embeds and edits his remarks, so the description is best read as his later reflection reported in context, not as a blanket claim that he considered the whole series a success.
Did he choose later films to escape Twilight?
Pattinson did not describe his post-franchise career as a conscious effort to flee Hollywood or prove something. In a Guardian profile published December 22, 2019, he said he wanted to work with directors he admired and make the films he wanted to make. GQ’s 2020 profile similarly reported that his later choices reflected his taste, rather than an attempt to demonstrate something in response to Twilight.

The fairest reading of Pattinson’s comments
- About the films: He joked about the premise, but also said he tried to make the movies as intelligent and uncheesy as possible.
- About the audience and backlash: He was surprised by the devotion the franchise inspired and said he did not understand the anger directed at it.
- About his later perspective: He later described the films in unexpectedly art-house terms, while explaining that his subsequent projects followed his interests and admiration for particular directors.
Those are public remarks made at different points in his career, not proof of a single permanent private opinion. The title’s suggestion that Pattinson thinks Twilight was simply “not good” is stronger than what these interviews support.
