The story that Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland is a legend. The shamrock-and-Trinity story is a later tradition rather than a documented episode from his life. And the idea that the day is simply a drinking holiday leaves out most of what Irish observance has involved. March 17 is the feast day of Ireland’s patron saint, and the day carries religious, cultural and, more recently, international meaning. The sources below separate what is documented from what is inherited and what is legend.
Did St. Patrick drive the snakes out of Ireland?
No contemporary evidence supports this. RTÉ Archives, in its 2023 page “St Patrick Fact Or Fiction?”, states that the snake story is not based on fact. Its summary also notes that Patrick did exist, but that contemporary texts about him are limited. That combination is the key to the whole subject: the historical figure is known mainly through a small body of early writing, and much of the popular story was added afterwards.
It is tempting to add a neat meaning, such as reading the snakes as a symbol for paganism. The sources consulted do not establish that interpretation, so it should not be presented as the established meaning of the legend. The accurate description is simply that the snake story is a legend.
Did he use a shamrock to explain the Trinity?
The National Museum of Ireland, in its folklife collection page “St. Patrick” (credited to Clodagh Doyle, Keeper of the Irish Folklife Division), describes the shamrock account of the Trinity as a relatively late tradition. It adds that triads were already central to pre-Christian Celtic religious tradition, which makes it less likely that Irish audiences needed the Trinity explained through a three-leaved plant.

The fair way to state this is as tradition, not as proven biography. The story is widely repeated and is part of how the day is remembered, but the museum does not present it as a firmly documented event from Patrick’s life.
Has St. Patrick’s Day always looked like it does now?
No single form of the celebration existed across the centuries. The National Museum’s account shows change at several points:

The 1681 entry is one of the clearest pieces of contemporary documentation, which is why it is useful when testing claims about how the day looked in earlier centuries. Descriptions from the later periods show the modern parade and festival as relatively recent forms, not as an unchanging inheritance.
Is St. Patrick’s Day just a drinking holiday?
The National Museum of Ireland records a day that began as religious observance. Its account includes Mass, the temporary lifting of Lenten restrictions, a meal after Mass, and a custom known as “drowning the shamrock,” which involves drinking. Drink is therefore one part of the day, not the whole of it.

The museum also records the other side of the drinking story. In the 19th century, the Temperance Movement criticized excessive drinking on the day and organized temperance parades in response. That criticism shows drinking was a visible and contested part of the celebration well before the modern international events, and it does not make drinking the defining purpose of the holiday.
Ireland.ie’s 2026 information page, “What is St Patrick’s Day?”, describes the holiday as having grown from a religious observance into an international celebration of Ireland’s culture and history. That description marks two different things: the Irish observance, rooted in a feast day, and the later global celebration, which took on a more festive and commercial character in many places. Judging the day by its international version alone gives an incomplete picture of what Irish people mark on March 17.

How to check a St. Patrick’s Day claim
Most myths about the day come from mixing up three kinds of material. Sorting a claim into one of these categories usually settles how confidently it can be repeated.
- Contemporary documentation: an account written at the time, such as Dinely’s 1681 observation. These can be cited as evidence of what people did then, and no further.
- Later tradition: a story passed down and repeated, such as the shamrock and Trinity account. It can be described as tradition, with the source saying so.
- Legend: a story without verifiable support, such as the snakes. It should be presented as legend.
When a claim involves Patrick’s life, check whether it rests on early texts. Sources that describe those texts as limited, as RTÉ Archives does, mean specific anecdotes should be labelled with care. When a claim involves the modern day, check the date and place: Dublin’s weekend festival, for example, is not a description of how Ireland as a whole marks the feast.
