Prince’s collaborators remembered a man who could be warm, funny and easy to talk with in private, while carefully keeping parts of himself from the public. The most grounded portrait comes from his unfinished memoir and the people who worked closely with him: it suggests a life shaped by family, music, discipline and a deliberate sense of mystery—not a single definitive answer to who he was.
What did Prince say shaped him?
Prince began working on an autobiography with editor Dan Piepenbring shortly before his death. The published The Beautiful Ones combines pages Prince wrote with Piepenbring’s account of their collaboration; it is an unfinished memoir, not a complete account of Prince’s life. In a Fresh Air interview, Piepenbring said Prince wanted the book to explain how he emerged from the contrasting influences of his parents.

The Prince Estate says his parents separated when he was seven. In an excerpt from his memoir reproduced on the Estate’s Prince’s Early Years page, Prince reflected: “Eye had no idea what impact that would have on me. Eye was 7 years old & more than anything Eye just wanted peace. A quiet space where Eye could hear myself think & create.”
That is Prince describing his own childhood, not a clinical explanation of his adult character. It does, however, make clear that he remembered wanting room to think and create. The Estate also reproduces his recollection of his father’s piano: “Here comes dad… I’m not supposed to touch his piano… but I want to play it so bad.” The same account recalls Prince describing his father waking with a melody and going to play it.

- Prince designed "Purple Rain" as the project that would make him a superstar, and surprisingly, that is exactly what happened. Simultaneously more focused and ambitious than any of his previous records, "Purple Rain" finds Prince consolidating his funk and R&B roots while moving boldly into pop, rock, and heavy metal with nine superbly crafted songs. Although Prince's songwriting is at a peak, the presence of the Revolution pulls the music into sharper focus, giving it a tougher, more aggressive edge. Even with all of his new, but uncompromising, forays into pop Prince hasn't abandoned funk. Taken together, all of the stylistic experiments add up to a stunning statement of purpo
Order, freedom and creative discipline
Piepenbring said Prince associated “order, finality and truth” with his father and a freer, more spontaneous impulse with his mother. He connected the disciplined work ethic he observed in Prince with his father’s example. That account offers a useful way to understand how Prince thought about his own influences, but it remains Piepenbring’s report of their conversations and his impression of Prince’s work habits.
Why did Prince guard his private life?
Prince’s privacy was not simply a barrier that others encountered; Piepenbring said Prince saw value in maintaining it. As he put it: “He had a very clear idea of the value that existed in letting the world know that you weren’t going to show them everything.” That is a collaborator’s account of Prince’s expressed thinking, not proof that every decision about privacy had one motive.

Historical profiles show how that boundary could shape access. A 1991 Face visit to Paisley Park, available as a transcription through an interview archive, describes the difficulty of gaining access and the guarded impression the visit left. A 2004 Newsweek profile described tightly controlled interview conditions and reported that Prince refused tape recorders because he disliked hearing his own voice. These are snapshots from particular moments, not timeless rules for how he behaved with everyone.
How did people close to him describe him?
Accounts from people who spent time with Prince complicate any image of unbroken distance. Piepenbring recalled that Prince had “a great, deadpan and warm sense of humour” and that he was surprised by Prince’s “autonomy and his ability to put people around him, including me, at ease,” as reported by The Guardian. In the Fresh Air interview, Piepenbring also described Prince as sunny and energetic when discussing his work, and said: “There was not a hedonistic bone in his body when I knew him.” That last remark is a personal impression from someone describing the Prince he knew; it cannot stand in for a full account of Prince’s life.

Photographer and videographer Afshin Shahidi offers another close-witness perspective. In a TIME interview, Shahidi described a relationship that included professional collaboration as well as travel and informal time together. He recalled Prince inviting him to spend time in Tokyo and see Chick Corea perform. Shahidi’s account is evidence of his own long friendship and working relationship, not a survey of how everyone around Prince experienced him.

The strongest available picture is of a person who managed his public image carefully and, according to close collaborators, could also be warm, humorous and animated in trusted company. Prince’s own surviving reflections point toward childhood, family and the need for quiet space; Piepenbring’s account adds Prince’s interest in discipline, contrasting parental influences and the value of withholding some things from public view.
Those pieces do not reveal every private relationship or settle how Prince behaved in every setting. A memoir left unfinished and a handful of witnesses’ memories cannot establish one complete, universal personality. For readers who want to follow Prince’s own intended account alongside Piepenbring’s recollections, The Beautiful Ones is the most direct starting point.
