What Lambert said while the relationship was public
The clearest on-record statement from the relationship period is Lambert’s reply to a fan in March 2019. Asked whether the two were making things official, he answered: “Honey, we have been official for months. IG isn’t the gatekeeper of our truth!” The line matters because it places the start of the relationship before the Instagram posts that first drew public attention. It also shows Lambert rejecting the idea that a social media post is what made the relationship real.

His later comments were warm but general. In the Yahoo Entertainment interview he described the positive emotional mood of his new music and spoke of Costa Polo as his boyfriend. Those remarks confirm that he regarded the relationship as ongoing in late 2019, but they do not explain how it ended.
The “New Eyes” connection
The Independent’s June 2019 feature reported that Lambert met Costa Polo on Instagram and that “New Eyes” was inspired by him. That is interview context, not a verified account of the song’s lyrics. Readers should not treat the song as a full narrative of the relationship or of its end.

Why the reason for the breakup is unconfirmed
Several explanations appear in online coverage of the split. None of them is established by a direct statement from Lambert or Costa Polo in the reporting available:
- Long distance: the idea that the two were separated by geography for much of the relationship.
- Costa Polo returning to Spain: a move back to his home country is repeated in secondary reporting.
- Immigration status: a claim that visa or residency questions played a role.
The main problem is sourcing. The November 2019 report that covers the breakup embeds Instagram Live videos but does not provide a dependable transcript on the page. Any explanation built on paraphrases of those videos is therefore secondhand. If you see one of these reasons stated as fact, treat it as a claim from secondary reporting, not a confirmed cause.
