Accounts from the production describe Grant feeling intimidated at first, followed by a playful, good-humored working rapport. The sources cited here do not establish that the actors had a real-life romance.
What happened between Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts?
They played William Thacker and Anna Scott, fictional characters who fall in love in Notting Hill. The film’s romance is not evidence that Grant and Roberts were romantically involved off screen. Public accounts document a professional connection: nerves, humor and mutual praise during filming.

Grant recalled being awed by Roberts. At a 2017 BAFTA interview, he called her “the real deal and terrifying.” During the film’s 1999 production, he told Vanity Fair: “I was all ready to be scared, and I must say, the fear never quite left me.” Those remarks describe his nerves, not a feud or a romantic relationship.
How did they get along on set?
A contemporaneous 1999 Los Angeles Times account described the actors praising each other. Roberts recalled Grant inventing funny introductions for extras during a wedding scene, helping ease the pressure she felt to be dazzling. Grant praised her humor and said they sometimes had trouble suppressing giggles in scenes. Together, these anecdotes suggest warmth and humor at work—not proof of a private relationship.

The production feature in Vanity Fair also distinguished Roberts from her character. Anna Scott shared some details with Roberts, including her profession and physical characteristics, but Roberts said the character did not share her views or reactions. On-screen chemistry and character details should not be treated as biographical evidence about the actors.
Did Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts date in real life?
The sources cited here do not confirm that they dated. They establish that Grant and Roberts were co-stars who shared a humorous working rapport; they do not establish a real-life romance. That is the careful answer, rather than treating the fictional plot or the actors’ chemistry as evidence of dating.

What about their friendship and staying in touch?
In a 2024 British Vogue conversation with Richard Curtis, Roberts spoke warmly about Notting Hill and her long friendship with its writer. Curtis described Roberts as a friend for around three decades, beginning with the film. Roberts called the “I’m just a girl” scene great and counted their friendship among the best things to come out of the movie. These comments concern Roberts and Curtis; they do not establish the present-day frequency of contact between Roberts and Grant.
A Bravo segment’s page description says Grant discussed whether he and Roberts stayed in touch and why she might hate him. The description alone does not establish his full answer or how often they currently communicate. A joke or question framed that way is not evidence that Roberts actually hates him.
Do the sequel comments suggest a falling-out?
No. In 2024, Curtis said he had imagined a short sequel in which Anna and William divorced, but Roberts thought it was a poor idea. Grant had also joked in 2020 about a sequel exposing the supposed “lie” of romantic-comedy happy endings. These remarks are about the fictional couple and the genre, not reports of conflict between the actors.
