Raki joins Clare after a Yoma kills his family and his village casts him out, and across the manga the two support each other through loss, danger, and the pressure of becoming less human. The official material supports a deep, enduring partnership. It does not confirm that they become a romantic couple.
How they meet
Raki’s family is killed by a Yoma disguised as a human. The village then expels him, treating him with the same fear it reserves for the monsters. He follows Clare because he does not see her as the monster others fear. Clare recognizes his loneliness as something close to her own, since she was orphaned too. She takes him along as a cook, a role that gives him a place in her travels without making him a fighter.
Why the bond is mutual
The relationship is not simply a warrior protecting a dependent. VIZ Media’s 2012 feature on the series, written by Katherine McGowan, describes the two as inspiring each other to keep living. In its words: “As they travel together, they inspire each other to keep living, even when all hope seems lost.” The feature says Clare saves Raki, and it also describes Raki as helping Clare avoid losing her humanity and fully awakening. Each gives the other a reason to keep going through despair.
What Clare gives Raki
- Protection and a place in her company after he has lost everything.
- Recognition of his isolation, which is the basis for her decision to take him in.
What Raki gives Clare
- A connection that pulls her back from the hardness that defines Claymores.
- A reason to keep living that goes beyond her own mission.
How Teresa fits in
Teresa took Clare in when Clare was a child, and her death becomes the reason Clare pursues vengeance against Priscilla. VIZ’s feature makes a direct comparison: “Clare’s relationship with Raki is similar to her relationship with the late Claymore Teresa.” The parallel rests on shared pain, companionship, and relief from loneliness.

The comparison is a parallel, not an equivalence. Clare does not simply treat Raki the way Teresa treated her, and Raki is not a replacement for Teresa. The two relationships come from different circumstances, and Clare and Raki have their own evolving bond.
Separation and reunion
The two are separated around the Ophelia conflict, and VIZ’s volume 8 summary says Clare searches for Raki afterward. Their paths cross again. VIZ’s volume 26 summary places both characters in the same confrontation around Rabona, which shows that the reunion carries into the series’ later stages.

The manga concludes with volume 27. VIZ lists it as the final volume on its volume 26 page, and Shueisha identifies volume 27 as the concluding volume in its listing for the title. The series ran from 2001 to 2014, according to VIZ’s series page.
Is their relationship romantic?
The official sources reviewed here establish closeness, mutual support, and a lasting partnership. They do not explicitly label Clare and Raki a romantic couple. Readers may interpret romantic feelings into particular scenes, and that reading is fair as interpretation. It should be kept separate from the canonical record, which does not make the status explicit.

Treating the two as a settled couple would go beyond what the publisher’s material says. Treating their bond as one-sided would be just as inaccurate, because VIZ describes support running in both directions.

The question covers Claymore as a whole, but the relationship evidence discussed here comes from the manga and its official volume summaries. VIZ’s series page notes that the manga was adapted into a television anime. Readers who know the relationship only from the anime should check the specific episodes or manga passages before drawing conclusions about how the bond is handled, since this article does not compare the two versions episode by episode.
