Its defining move, as Davis described it, is a “one, two tap.” The dance spread through social media and Louisiana football, became widely recognizable through Justin Jefferson’s touchdown celebrations, and reached gaming through Fortnite’s Get Griddy emote. Those milestones explain how it became familiar; they do not establish how popular it is today.
What is the Griddy?
The Griddy is a dance built around a quick, repeated footwork pattern. Creator Allen Davis described it as a “one, two” tap. His explanation gives the core idea, not a detailed, official choreography with a fixed set of steps. Complex’s 2020 interview with Davis and Justin Jefferson documents that description.

Who invented the Griddy?
Allen Davis created the dance while he was a student at Landry Walker High School in New Orleans. In the 2020 Complex interview, he recalled starting it in the weight room in 2017, when he was a freshman. A friend recorded him, shared the clip with him, and Davis posted it on Snapchat. He said classmates began trying the dance, and that he later told friends to call it the Griddy. The NFL and Epic Games also credit Davis as its creator.
How did the Griddy spread?
From a school dance to football in Louisiana
After classmates began copying Davis, social posts carried the movement beyond his school. NFL.com reports that Jefferson saw the dance gaining traction in New Orleans high-school football and introduced it to LSU teammates in 2017. Davis’s account and the NFL’s history describe different parts of the same path: the dance began with Davis, then moved through school and football communities. NFL.com’s account covers Jefferson’s adoption of it.

Justin Jefferson made it a visible touchdown celebration
Jefferson kept doing the Griddy after scoring, first at LSU and later as a professional. The NFL reports that he performed it on a national stage against Texas two seasons after introducing it to LSU teammates, and that it became a go-to celebration during LSU’s national championship run. In the 2020 Complex interview, Jefferson said the repeated celebrations became what he was known for. His role was as a prominent adopter and ambassador, not the dance’s creator.
Fortnite brought it into gaming
Epic Games announced on April 26, 2021, that Fortnite’s “Get Griddy” emote would debut in the Item Shop on April 28. The announcement credited Davis and described a Justin Jefferson Locker Bundle that included the emote. These are the dates and details of the 2021 announcement; they do not confirm whether the emote is available in the Item Shop now. Epic’s announcement records the release details.

Why did the Griddy become popular?
The available accounts point to a chain of exposure rather than one proven cause: classmates copied the dance, social media carried it outward, football players adopted it, Jefferson repeatedly performed it after touchdowns, and Fortnite made it familiar to players as an emote. Each step put the dance in front of another audience.
Jefferson later described seeing children do the dance in neighborhoods and airports. In a September 21, 2022 interview with the Minnesota Vikings, he called its fast spread a long journey and said he had dreamed of becoming a trending topic with a dance he brought to the league. Those comments offer his perspective on its reach, not a count of participants or a ranking. The Vikings interview includes his observations.

How popular is the Griddy today?

It is accurate to say the Griddy became widely recognizable through football celebrations and a Fortnite emote; the sources do not quantify its current popularity.
