Kanao Tsuyuri is the official anime site’s example: it identifies her as the Insect Hashira’s Tsuguko, linking her to Shinobu Kocho. The title describes that relationship; the character page does not say it makes Kanao a Hashira automatically.
What does “tsuguko” mean?
The term describes a swordswoman or swordsman connected to a Hashira as an apprentice or successor-in-training. The official English Hashira Training Arc character page calls Kanao “The Insect Hashira’s Tsuguko.” That supports the mentor-and-trainee meaning, but it is not a full glossary definition or account of the role’s rules.
Who is Shinobu Kocho’s Tsuguko?
Kanao Tsuyuri is Shinobu Kocho’s Tsuguko. The official English character page states their connection directly. The official Japanese Demon Slayer character portal identifies Shinobu as the Insect Hashira and describes Kanao as a swordswoman who survived Final Selection.
Does being a Tsuguko make Kanao a Hashira?
Not by itself, based on the official character page. It identifies Kanao as Shinobu’s Tsuguko, but does not say she is a Hashira or that the position automatically promotes her if Shinobu leaves the role. The safest distinction is that Tsuguko describes her connection to a Hashira, not a confirmed change in rank.

What does the official profile say about Kanao?
The official English profile associates Kanao with exceptional physical agility. It does not set out a complete Tsuguko training curriculum or explain the appointment and promotion process. The cited official pages also do not establish that a Tsuguko must use the mentor’s Breathing Style, so those details should not be treated as confirmed rules.

A Hashira is one of the Demon Slayer Corps’ leading swordsmen or swordswomen, identified by a title such as Insect Hashira or Love Hashira. The Japanese character portal identifies Shinobu as the Insect Hashira, while its Mitsuri Kanroji profile identifies her as the Love Hashira. Kanao’s Tsuguko label links her to Shinobu, but the official pages cited here do not lay out a universal system governing every Hashira’s apprentice or successor.
