People also use “Rule 63” as shorthand for a gender-swapped character or fan creation. It is a playful fandom convention, not a literal rule: the label does not mean every character has an existing counterpart.
What does Rule 63 mean?
The traditional wording is: “for every fictional character, there exists an opposite-gender counterpart.” In practice, the phrase can describe an individual gender-swapped character, an artwork or story featuring one, or the broader fandom idea.
“Opposite-gender counterpart” reflects the adage’s conventional wording. Creators’ interpretations of a character’s gender and presentation can vary, and the label alone does not determine a character’s identity, canon status, or creator’s intent.
Where did Rule 63 come from?
Rule 63 is associated with the anonymously written Rules of the Internet, an informal list of online-community adages. Know Your Meme dates the rule’s introduction to an expanded version of the list, likely published in 2007; Dictionary.com also places the list in online forums in 2007. The underlying creative idea is older than the label: imagining characters with changed genders did not begin with the internet list.

How is Rule 63 used in fandom?
The phrase appears in discussions of fan art, fan fiction, cosplay, and gender-swapped characters in official media. Know Your Meme points to Finn and Fionna from Adventure Time and the meme pairing Derp and Derpina as examples of the idea in fandom and meme culture. The phrase can apply to fan-made work or official media; it does not, by itself, say who made or authorized a particular version.
Rule 63 is not a synonym for pornography and is separate from Rule 34, a different internet adage. Creators may use gender-swapped interpretations for fun, to explore representation, or to imagine different narrative possibilities, but no single motive applies to every work.

In cosplay, gender-bending adapts a character’s gendered presentation. Crossplay, by contrast, aims to portray the character’s canon gender as seamlessly as possible. Both sit within the broader practice of cosplay, but they describe different approaches to presenting a character. These terms are useful distinctions, not a formal taxonomy that settles every interpretation.
