Early profiles described her hair as honey-colored or sandy-colored, but those descriptions capture how she looked at particular moments—not a verified, single natural shade. The available accounts do not establish an exact uncolored hair color.
What Carey has said about her childhood hair
In a 2009 interview with The Guardian, Carey recalled, “As a little girl I had blond hair.” It is the clearest first-person statement about her childhood color, but it does not identify a standardized shade or establish that every childhood image shows untreated hair.
How early profiles described her hair
Two 1991 profiles used different descriptive terms for Carey’s appearance at the time. Ebony described her as having “long, semi-curly, honey-colored tresses,” while Jet called her hair “fine sandy-colored.” These are journalists’ descriptions of her hair then, not a precise record of its natural color.
What her accounts of dyeing do—and don’t—show
Carey recalled experimenting with highlights in seventh grade. In a 1994 Seventeen interview, she said the attempt came out orange all over. That memory confirms she tried highlighting her hair, but does not say what its base shade was.

In a 2018 Pitchfork interview, Carey also described accidentally dyeing her hair orange the year before a difficult period at school. The interviews do not establish whether this was the same episode as the seventh-grade highlighting attempt, so the two accounts should not be combined into one event.

Carey’s recollection supports saying she had blond hair as a child; the early profiles add period descriptions of honey-colored and sandy-colored hair. None of these accounts specifies one exact natural shade. In a 2022 People interview, she discussed having several hair textures as a child, but that comment concerns texture, not color.
Rank #2
So “blond as a child” is the best-supported concise answer. Calling her natural color definitively dirty blond, light brown, or another precise shade goes beyond what these interviews and profiles establish.
