Its personality is not identical in every appearance: Pokémon UNITE emphasizes ambushes, an animated-series episode gives one Gengar a grievance against its former Trainer, and a Pokémon Shield entry paints Gigantamax Gengar as especially sinister.
What traits define Gengar?
Stealth and surprise recur in official portrayals. The Pokémon UNITE profile describes Gengar as “a Pokémon that lurks in the shadows” and “a master of surprise attacks.” It says Gengar can approach opponents silently and become invisible with its Unite Move. That supports describing Gengar as sneaky or ambush-oriented, rather than treating it as simply playful.
Is Gengar mischievous?
It can be. In the animated-series episode “A Chilling Curse!”, Gengar has resumed playing pranks at the Cerise Laboratory. The episode presents the pranks alongside a specific emotional cause, rather than establishing that every Gengar behaves the same way.
Why is the Gengar in “A Chilling Curse!” angry?
The episode’s synopsis says Gengar is furious because its former Trainer abandoned it. After helping Ash and Pikachu battle Team Rocket, Gengar makes clear that it wants to join Ash, and its anger subsides. This gives that individual Gengar a story of hurt, anger, and a change of heart; it is not a universal origin story for the species.

Is Gengar scary?
Some official depictions are deliberately frightening. A Pokémon article quoting the Pokémon Shield Pokédex gives Gigantamax Gengar a particularly sinister description: “It lays traps, hoping to steal the lives of those it catches. If you stand in front of its mouth, you’ll hear your loved ones’ voices calling out to you.” The wording applies to Gigantamax Gengar in Pokémon Shield; it should not be treated as a description of every Gengar in every story.

The sources emphasize different things: Pokémon UNITE presents a tactical surprise attacker, “A Chilling Curse!” shows a prank-playing individual whose anger follows abandonment, and the Pokémon Shield entry makes Gigantamax Gengar a trap-setting threat. These are related through stealth and frightening behavior, but they are distinct contexts—not one definitive psychological profile.
