Oktoberfest began in Munich in 1810 as a celebration connected with the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese. Today, it is a major Bavarian folk festival, bringing together beer, food, music, rides, parades and local traditions. Its royal wedding is the festival’s origin, not the sole purpose of its modern celebration.
Why was the first Oktoberfest held?
Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen on 12 October 1810. Munich’s official account says the wedding festivities lasted five days; the City of Munich identifies 17 October as the opening of the first Oktoberfest, held with a large horse race. These are related but distinct dates: the wedding took place on 12 October, while the first festival opened five days later. The official Oktoberfest history and the City of Munich FAQ describe the events.
The celebration took place on a meadow named Theresienwiese after the bride. The grounds are still known by that name, while locals often call both the meadow and the festival the Wiesn.
How did a wedding celebration become a folk festival?
The first event was not the modern Oktoberfest in miniature. Its activities included the wedding festivities and a horse race, but it had no beer tents or fairground rides. As the event recurred and developed, it grew into a public folk festival with food, music, attractions and traditions alongside beer. The official history puts the distinction plainly: “Even though there were no beer tents or fairground rides on the Wiesn at the time, this was the birth of the Oktoberfest.”

What is Oktoberfest celebrated for today?
Today’s Munich Oktoberfest is celebrated as a gathering around Bavarian folk culture and public festivity, not simply as a reenactment or anniversary of a royal wedding. Beer is prominent, but the event also includes food, music, fairground rides and parades. The City of Munich describes a parade on the first Sunday featuring people in traditional costume, marksmen’s clubs, brass bands and floats.
Traditional clothing, including dirndls and lederhosen, is a familiar part of the festival’s visual culture, but wearing it is customary or popular—not a requirement for attending.
