Plex is a media server and player: you run software on a computer or network storage device that holds your own films, shows, music and photos, and then watch them on phones, TVs, computers, streaming boxes or game consoles. Plex also operates a separate free, ad-supported streaming service. The two are easy to confuse, and most of the confusion (and most of the cost questions) comes from mixing them up.
The two things called “Plex”
Plex is best understood as two products that share a name and a login system.
- Your personal library. Plex Media Server runs on a computer, a compatible NAS or an NVIDIA SHIELD where your files are stored. It catalogs the library, adds artwork and descriptive information, and streams the result to Plex apps on your devices. The content is yours; Plex supplies the organization and playback.
- Plex’s free streaming catalog. Plex also offers its own free Movies & Shows and live TV service. This catalog is supplied by Plex and is paid for by advertising. It has nothing to do with the files on your server.
Plex Pass is tied to the first product. It does not unlock, change or remove ads from the free streaming catalog. Keeping these two apart will save you from most billing and setup misunderstandings.
How a Plex setup works
A basic installation has two parts: a server that holds and serves the library, and one or more players that display it. Plex’s official support overview describes the same sequence.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Step 1: Choose the machine that will host the library
Plex lists Windows, macOS and Linux computers, NVIDIA SHIELD, and many popular NAS devices as possible server hosts. Its named NAS examples include Synology, QNAP and Netgear products. The host must be able to keep the library reachable while you watch. A laptop that sleeps when you close the lid is a poor long-term host.
Step 2: Install Plex Media Server where the media is stored
Install the server software on that host and sign in with a Plex account. Plex’s getting-started outline begins with this step, and the server is the part that does the cataloguing and streaming.
Step 3: Add libraries by content type
Create a library for each kind of content, such as movies, TV shows, music or photos, and point it at the folders where those files live. Keeping folders organized by type makes the metadata matching far more reliable. Plex can then add artwork and information to the entries it recognizes.

Step 4: Open a Plex app on a playback device
Install or open a Plex app on a supported device. Plex’s player list covers Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari; Android and iOS phones; iPadOS tablets; Windows, macOS and Linux computers; selected smart TVs; Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast and Roku devices; Sonos; and PlayStation and Xbox consoles. These are device categories from Plex’s support overview. Confirm that your specific TV or console model is supported before buying hardware for it.

Plex says its server handles common formats including MP4, MKV, AVI, MOV and DivX video, MP3, M4A, FLAC and WMA audio, and JPG, PNG and RAW images, among others. Support for a format on the server does not guarantee smooth playback on every client. Playback depends on the video and audio codecs inside the file, the capabilities of the device you are watching on, your network speed, and whether the server has to transcode (convert the stream on the fly) because the device cannot handle the original file. A file that plays on a laptop may stutter on an older TV, and the fix is usually a different client or a re-encoded copy rather than a server setting.
Hardware: where to run the server
Plex’s own description names a NAS as a legitimate dedicated server. A NAS suits people who want the server running all the time, with the library on the same box. Choose a model on the basis of four factors: how large the library is, how many people will stream at once, which codecs your files use, and how much transcoding you expect. Plex’s support material does not single out a best NAS model, and capacity requirements change with the features you use, so check the current compatibility information for the exact model before you buy.

Is Plex free?
The answer depends on whether you are watching at home or away from home, and on which device you use. Plex’s free-versus-paid guidance separates these cases.
| Situation | What Plex’s current rules say |
|---|---|
| Streaming your personal video on the same local network | Free. Plex lists local personal video streaming among its free features. |
| Streaming personal video remotely on a smart TV or game console (rule announced March 11, 2026, effective March 23, 2026) | Requires Plex Pass on the server owner’s account, or Remote Watch Pass on the individual viewer’s account. |
| Remote music and photo libraries | Not affected by the March 2026 change, according to Plex’s announcement of that change. |
| Plex’s free Movies & Shows and live TV | Free and ad-supported. Plex Pass does not change this content or remove its ads. |
Remote Watch Pass covers only remote streaming for an individual account, from servers that account can access. Plex Pass includes remote streaming and adds further features for personal media. The two are not interchangeable: a viewer who only needs remote access to someone else’s server can use Remote Watch Pass, while a server owner who wants the broader feature set needs Plex Pass.

Pricing changes
Plex’s official forum announcement by PlexInfo, dated May 18, 2026, said that starting July 1, 2026 the price of a new Lifetime Plex Pass would rise to US$749.99. The same announcement said monthly and annual Plex Pass and Remote Watch Pass prices were unchanged by that update. The Lifetime figure is a US dollar price from a company announcement, not a guarantee of the price in your currency or storefront. Check Plex’s current plans and subscription pages before you pay.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plex compared with Netflix
Plex’s own support page answers the question “Is Plex like Netflix?” with a clear distinction. Netflix is a subscription catalog that Netflix supplies. Plex organizes and plays media that you own or otherwise store, through a server you run, and it also runs a separate free ad-supported service. The table below compares the two on the points that matter for choosing.
| Question | Plex | Netflix |
|---|---|---|
| Who supplies the media? | You, for your personal library. Plex supplies the separate free catalog. | The service supplies its catalog. |
| Do you run anything yourself? | Yes, a Plex Media Server on a host you control, for personal media. | No. |
| Can you watch away from home? | Yes, subject to the remote-access rules described above. | Yes, on supported devices. |
| Are there ads? | Not on your personal library. Plex’s free Movies & Shows and live TV are ad-supported. | Not covered in this comparison; check Netflix’s current plan details. |
| Is a subscription needed? | Free for local personal streaming; a pass is needed for some remote personal streaming. | Yes, for its catalog. |
The practical test is simple: if you want to watch films you already own, or your own home recordings and music, Plex is a server for them. If you want a catalog that someone else chooses and maintains, a streaming subscription is the relevant product.

Common problems and fixes
- The server does not appear on your playback device. Make sure the host computer or NAS is powered on and has not gone to sleep, and that both devices are signed in to the same Plex account.
- A remote stream on a TV or console will not start. Check whether the server owner has Plex Pass or whether the viewer has Remote Watch Pass, as the March 2026 rule requires for those platforms.
- A file plays with stuttering or no sound. The usual cause is a codec the device cannot decode, or a transcode the host cannot keep up with. Try a different client, or re-encode the file to a more widely supported format.
- A movie or show has the wrong artwork or details. Plex matches files by name and folder structure. Renaming files to match the library’s naming convention, and keeping one title per folder, usually fixes the match.
Who Plex suits
Plex suits people who already keep a personal media collection and want it on every screen in the house, and who are comfortable running a server host. It suits less well anyone who wants a single subscription catalog with nothing to maintain, because that is a different product.
The Bottom Line
Plex is a personal media server with a player on every device you own, plus a separate free ad-supported streaming service. Local streaming of your own library is free. Remote streaming on some platforms requires Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass, and the Plex Pass subscription does not affect the free streaming catalog. Check the current support rules for your device and the current plans page before you pay.
