It is often a solo vocal melody accompanied by lute, sometimes with bass viol. Many ayres reuse the same music for each verse, but scoring and structure vary: the term describes a tradition, not a fixed recipe.
What an ayre sounds like
In a typical ayre, one singer carries a clear, prominent melody while the lute supports it. The singer might accompany themselves; a bass viol could also be included. Some settings use additional voices or instruments, so solo voice and lute are common rather than mandatory. Larousse’s music dictionary describes the period’s characteristic scoring and performance practice.
The texture is often homophonic: the vocal line stands out, with accompaniment supporting it, rather than several equally prominent, independent melodies. That is a useful contrast with the more contrapuntal sound often associated with madrigals, although ayre composers could also draw on madrigalian techniques. Sally J. Wylie’s 1972 thesis on composer John Danyel describes the ayre’s melody-led character and carefully composed accompaniment.
Form: repeated verses, with exceptions
Many ayres are strophic. That means successive verses of a poem are sung to the same music. Repetition makes the form easy to recognize, but it can create a practical challenge: the words in later verses may not fit the musical accents as naturally as those in the first.

Strophic form is not a requirement. Some ayres are through-composed, with music that changes as the text unfolds. John Dowland’s “In Darkness Let Me Dwell” is a notable example. It is more accurate to call repeated-verse writing typical than to treat it as a defining rule.
Ayre, air, French air de cour, and madrigal
| Term | What it means | How it differs or overlaps |
|---|---|---|
| Ayre (or air) | An English song tradition associated especially with the late 16th and early 17th centuries. | In discussions of Elizabethan and Jacobean music, “ayre” usually points to English lute song. Historical spelling varies, and “air” has broader uses. |
| French air de cour | A French court-song tradition related to the English ayre. | It is not simply another name for an ayre. Larousse notes that English ayres were often more strictly measured than their French counterpart. |
| Madrigal | A vocal genre commonly associated with interweaving, independent melodic lines. | Ayres are often more melody-led, but composers could use madrigalian techniques. The distinction is a helpful comparison, not an absolute boundary. |
These are broad distinctions, not rigid rules. The English ayre is best identified by its historical and national context alongside its frequent emphasis on voice and instrumental accompaniment. Nigel Fortune, David Greer, and Charles Dill treat the English ayre as a distinct historical category in their Grove Music Online entry, “Air (i).”

When the English ayre became prominent
John Dowland’s First Booke of Songes or Ayres, published in 1597, is a major landmark in the printed tradition. The date marks an important printed collection, not proof that no related songs existed earlier. Grove’s historical entry covers the English ayre from 1597 to 1650; Wylie’s 1972 thesis follows a shorter publishing arc through John Attey’s The First Booke of Ayres in 1622.
Other composers associated with the tradition include Thomas Morley, Philip Rosseter, Thomas Campion, Thomas Ford, and John Danyel. Rosseter and Campion are associated with a 1601 collection. Ayres could also borrow melodies or character from dance forms such as the pavane, galliard, and jig; those influences do not make every ayre a dance.

Is a lute song the same as an ayre?
Not exactly. “Lute song” describes a broad performance type—a song with lute accompaniment—while “ayre” refers more specifically to an English historical song tradition. Many ayres are lute songs, and the terms often overlap when discussing this repertoire, but a lute-accompanied song is not automatically an English ayre.
