His B-17, Royal Flush, was the only one of the 100th Bomb Group’s 13 aircraft to return to Thorpe Abbotts that day. The raid was only one chapter in Rosenthal’s war: he went on to fly 52 combat missions, was shot down twice, and returned to England after his final mission in February 1945. After the war, he worked on the U.S. prosecution team at the Nuremberg trials.
Does Rosie Rosenthal survive the Münster raid in episode 5?
Yes. Episode 5, titled “Part Five,” depicts the 100th Bomb Group’s October 10, 1943, raid on Münster. Rosenthal returns to base in Royal Flush. The 100th Bomb Group Foundation’s account says it was the only one of the Group’s 13 aircraft to return to Thorpe Abbotts that day. 100th Bomb Group Foundation and Air University’s episode review provide the historical and episode context.

That outcome does not mark the end of Rosenthal’s combat story. The episode covers one perilous mission; his later service included many more missions and another shootdown.
What happens to Rosenthal after the Münster mission?
He continues flying and survives a first shootdown
Rosenthal completed 52 combat missions and was shot down twice, according to the National WWII Museum’s 2021 veteran spotlight and a 2024 Jewish Telegraphic Agency profile. The Museum says he was shot down over France, injured, and resumed flying about a month after being released from hospital. The Münster raid was therefore not his last dangerous mission.

His final mission ends with rescue by the Red Army
On February 3, 1945, during his 52nd and final mission, Rosenthal’s aircraft exploded. The JTA profile reports that the Red Army recovered him and returned him to his air unit; the National WWII Museum says he was then returned to England. His wartime story ends after a second shootdown, not at Münster.
What did Rosenthal do after the war?
Rosenthal returned to law and joined the U.S. prosecution team at the Nuremberg War Trials in June 1946, according to the National WWII Museum. The JTA profile reports that he interrogated Hermann Göring and met fellow lawyer Phillis Heller on the voyage to Nuremberg; they married there. Rosenthal died in 2007, aged 89.

How does episode 5 fit into the real story?
Episode 5 focuses on the October 1943 Münster mission, while Rosenthal’s 52-mission record, his February 1945 shootdown and rescue, and his postwar legal work all belong to later chapters. Historical accounts establish the broad chronology; they should not be taken to verify every line of episode dialogue or the exact dramatic sequencing of scenes.
Masters of the Air is an Apple TV+ miniseries based on Donald L. Miller’s book Masters of the Air: America’s Bomber Boys Who Fought the Air War Against Nazi Germany. The National WWII Museum also identifies The Bloody Hundredth as a companion documentary featuring the real airmen. Streaming availability can change.
