Geauga Lake and SeaWorld Ohio began as neighboring parks. Six Flags later brought them together as one resort, first called Six Flags Ohio and then Six Flags Worlds of Adventure. Cedar Fair bought the combined property in 2004 and restored the Geauga Lake name. The amusement park stopped operating after the 2007 season; its water park, Wildwater Kingdom, remained open until 2016.
Were Geauga Lake and SeaWorld Ohio the same park?
No. They were separate, neighboring attractions: Geauga Lake was an amusement park, and SeaWorld Ohio operated beside it. Six Flags acquired the SeaWorld property and combined attractions from both parks into a single complex. The resort’s identities followed in sequence: Six Flags Ohio, then Six Flags Worlds of Adventure. The names do not describe two parks that were always one operation.

In April 2004, Cedar Fair completed its acquisition of the combined property and brought back the Geauga Lake name. A contemporaneous Cedar Fair filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission valued the cash transaction at $144.25 million. The filing said the park drew more than 1.5 million guests annually, principally from the Cleveland/Akron, Youngstown, and Pittsburgh markets; that figure is the company’s statement at the time of the transaction, not a later attendance measure. Why did the amusement park close?
Cedar Fair announced on September 21, 2007, that Geauga Lake & Wildwater Kingdom would become exclusively a water park attraction beginning with the 2008 season. Its announcement did not give a specific attendance decline, competition, or other broader cause for ending amusement-park operations. It is therefore more accurate to describe the change as Cedar Fair’s announced operating decision than to assign it a motive the company did not establish in that release.

“After four years of operating Geauga Lake as a combined water park/amusement park attraction, we have concluded that its future should be entirely as a water park.”
What happened to Wildwater Kingdom?
The water park outlasted the rides but did not remain open permanently. Wildwater Kingdom closed in 2016. A 2017 Cleveland State University planning report described the former park property as vacant after its closure and discussed the site’s geography and development challenges. What is at the former park site now?
Reports from 2022 described redevelopment underway or planned at the former site, including homes, apartments, retail, walking trails, parks, and woodlands. Those reports document proposals and activity at that time; they do not establish that every project was completed. The sources available for this account also do not verify the site’s full present-day status as of October 2026. News 5 Cleveland’s 2022 report
The place is also marked by a historical plaque. In a June 2023 report, WVXU said Aurora and the Aurora Historical Society, together with the Ohio History Connection, had unveiled the commemorative plaque in 2017. WVXU’s June 2023 report
