What happened to the sequel?
The original Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw was released in 2019, starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham and directed by David Leitch. Universal’s home-entertainment page lists the film in digital, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD editions. Universal said at the time that the film had made more than $680 million worldwide; that was a contemporaneous 2019 figure, not a newly verified lifetime total. Universal’s 2019 press release.
In a 2021 interview, producer Hiram Garcia said the team was writing a possible next Hobbs movie with creative freedom: “We’re letting the story dictate where the characters go, but we are writing the story with complete freedom in terms of making the craziest version of a Hobbs movie we can.” The comment showed development interest at that time; it did not announce a production start or release date. Is the 2023 Luke Hobbs movie the same project?
No. TheWrap reported in 2023 that Universal was developing an untitled Luke Hobbs movie intended to bridge Fast X and Fast X: Part II. That report distinguished it from a Hobbs & Shaw sequel and from a spinoff. It should not be treated as confirmation of Hobbs & Shaw 2. TheWrap’s 2023 report.
Will Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham return?
There is no published sequel-specific cast list in the latest status reporting. Johnson and Statham are natural possibilities because they played Hobbs and Shaw in the original, but neither should be described as confirmed for a sequel.
