After becoming a pop-rap star in the early 2010s, he moved toward independent releases, took a hiatus, and later said he was rebuilding his career. His 2016 flat-Earth claims and the song “Flatline” became a lasting part of his public image, but available sources do not show that the controversy alone caused his reduced mainstream visibility. His later work includes the 2024 album Space Time and the single “G CLASS,” listed by Apple Music on September 11, 2026.
How B.o.B. became a mainstream star
B.o.B., born Bobby Ray Simmons, broke through with a melodic blend of rap and pop. “Nothin’ on You,” “Airplanes,” and “Magic” helped make him one of the most visible crossover rappers of the early 2010s. AllMusic describes that period as one marked by numerous platinum, pop-oriented hit singles, while Apple Music continues to surface those songs among his top tracks.

That high-profile crossover era is the backdrop to the question of what happened: his later career took a different path, but the change in visibility should not be mistaken for an end to his music career.
What happened in the 2016 flat-Earth controversy?
In January 2016, B.o.B. publicly argued that Earth is flat and exchanged claims with astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. B.o.B. released “Flatline” in response. Tyson addressed the scientific claims publicly, including explaining how Earth’s curvature affects the visibility of the North Star for people far south of the equator. Space.com reported on Tyson’s response.

The song also drew criticism for material beyond the shape of Earth. TIME reported that its lyrics invoked other conspiracy theories and praised Holocaust denier David Irving. Those references contributed to the controversy surrounding “Flatline” and made the episode a durable part of B.o.B.’s public image. TIME’s contemporaneous report covers the track and the dispute.
The sources establish that the controversy happened and affected how B.o.B. was discussed publicly. They do not quantify its effect on sales, label relationships, or the course of his career, so it would be inaccurate to say that it alone ended his mainstream run.

What did B.o.B. do after the controversy?
He continued releasing music, increasingly outside the mainstream pop-rap spotlight. In a 2024 interview with SHEEN Magazine, B.o.B. described taking a hiatus for a couple of years and said he was rebuilding his career. He explained that his Elements series began with WATER in 2015 and concluded with Space Time. Read the SHEEN interview.
That account is B.o.B.’s explanation of his own career and motivation; it does not establish why his mainstream visibility changed or assign the change to one cause.

Is B.o.B. still making music?
Yes. Space Time was released in 2024 and closed the Elements series. Apple Music lists “G CLASS” as a B.o.B. single released on September 11, 2026, showing that he has continued releasing music. His Apple Music catalog provides the current discography listing. Rhino’s 2025 announcement also identifies Space Time as the series finale while announcing activity tied to the 15th anniversary of The Adventures of Bobby Ray. See Rhino’s announcement.
